Collecting Red Books.....anyone?

10+ years ago I started collecting vintage copies of tbe "Red Book" , hoping one day to have every edition. I've started buying them again...I just received the 3rd edition (1949) in the mail today. I do know that Frank (treashunt) collects them and has even written a book about them. Are there any other Red Book collectors out there?

Yes! I have collected Red Books for quite a while. I also collect the Blue Books and The Green Coin Book.

I only pick up a new book for the collection a few times a year. But, I am on the first eleven editions for the Red Book to complete the collection. These are all hardcover edition only. Then I will need to obtain the eighteen special editions. I don't know if I will go for the limited leather editions yet or not.

But, once I have "it all", I'll start upgrading them all to Mint/NM condition as best I can from what is available.

 

I have a bunch of them, but more an accumulation since I am not actively collecting. Picked up a nice 2nd edition at a library book sale a few years ago for $1. You never know...

 

Wow...I wish I had that kind of luck. I'm concentrating on the first 10 to 15 editions right now..getting the most expensive ones out of the way first. I've had the most luck at flea markets.

 

I also collect Red Books. Great for research.

 

Somebody here posted a photo a while back of his Redbook collection. It was complete and a darned impressive photo to look at too.

 

This pic is a year or two old but it is complete. The first couple years are in pretty rough condition and there are several special editions mixed in.

 

I have a complete annual set, but I don’t collect the varieties.

 

I tried it for a while but quit. I have about 20 books. Mostly 60's and 70's.

 

Is Frank (treashunt) still around?

Is there a guide to Red Books? A sort of "Red Book of Red Books"? If so, collecting those would add another level of indirection.

 

As far as I know, there is no "Red Book of Red Books". But, there has been a "Guide as a Collectible" and valuation section of the Red Book itself since the 1995 edition.

As far as my "Red Book" collection goes...I'm only missing the 1st, 2nd and 5th editions to complete my set up to 1970. I'm also collecting the Handbook of United States Coins or the "Blue Book" but I'm not very far along with those.

 

Is anyone collecting the Mega Red editions? I have all six, so far. For casual early copper collectors, the first edition, is a inexpensive reference for these type coins.

 

I have a complete year set of Red Books. I don’t have an of the varieties except for a couple my wife and received at a FUN anniversary banquet some years ago.

As for the Mega Red Books, I don’t see them as becoming collectors’ items. They are too recent and don’t have a pioneering history like the original books has.

 

I agree about the Mega Red Book. I don't have any of those and honestly don't see myself buying them.
