I am not sure the ancient forum is the right place for this coin. I guess it depends on its date. The coin is, I believe, a gold dinar weighing 4.3 grams. I have no idea what the inscriptions say and am , therefore, ignorant of its date and location. A friend who saw this coin, and does collect in this area, said it was a dinar of the Umayyads and dates to the Eighth Century AD. Maybe. I would appreciate anyone who might enlighten me on this coin and perhaps direct me to a site that has these coins so I can get a ball park estimate of its value. Thanks for any assistance
This one looks pretty darn close. https://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotv...&Lot=116&Val=2d31077e414ded801b6179c30adee50b
Thanks, it does, but I must admit that all of this Kufic script looks the same to me. I'd joke that it is Greek to me but I did study Greek and can read that. I am not sure I even have the coin right side up. Thanks again.
FWIW, in my near-zero experience in this specialty, I'd say yep, looks consistent with how a medieval Islamic dinar should look, generally speaking, but of course I have no real help to give with attribution. I will say that it looks a bit shiny, so perhaps ex- jewelry?
compare with this category: https://www.zeno.ru/showgallery.php?cat=15491 An expert will want to see this in hand to judge whether this is genuine.
That's probably from my LED lamp 12 inches from the coin. I realize that I didn't need as much light as when imaging worn silver or dark bronze.
Sure, I understand that from my dealings with ancients. What I really want to find out is purported age and origin. I like my coins to talk to me but whatever this one has to say I can't fathom what it might be. By the way, this coin has been in medieval portfolio for decades sandwiched between Byzantine coins. I figure they might have a lot to say to each other, but I have spent so much time and effort on my ancients that I just now decided that I have to nail down its time and place in history.
Your 'other side' of the coin is upside down. It should be like this: The two 'pincer' signs at the beginning and end of the first horizontal line are a sure sign we are dealing with the obverse of a medieval Islamic coin: it's the text of the Kalima. You can find the date at 1-3 o'clock in this picture. I think it ends with 100 (mi'at, looking like OIO) and before that is [d or 9 = and] 1, but I may be wrong. The style suggests an Umayyad gold coin, and the date 101 would fit with that, it's 720 AD. The weight is pretty important, and I think you should need an electronic scale that goes into the .01-s. But 4.3 grams looks o.k. However, to decide about the style... that's for experts.
Beautiful coin and unfortunately way too much dinero for a dinar in my world! That's why they say the hobby of collecting coins is "The King's Hobby"!
Date is not on the side Pellinore copied the picture of, but on the other side. Pellinore probably misread "rasul Allah" for "bism Allah". Date looks to be 87AH.
