While viewing listings on the Bay of graded silver dollars, I occasionally see notations at the end of the coin description such as 1922 Peace Silver Dollar NGC (or PCGS) MS65 rare *816; not on the slab itself, just the description. I've also seen these notations on other graded coin descriptions. Not having any luck googling this subject. Is there a on line list available of these numerical designations and their corresponding meaning ? Any and all help appreciated.

I've never noticed this, but I can imagine that it is some sort of filing # the seller uses for some purpose of his own.

Just a guess but if the notation is "rare *816" I wonder if it's some sort of reference to a VAM variety.

I agree with @Whodowl it is a reference system for the coin seller. Each dealer should have some type of system so when they go to pick the coin from a lot of the same types , they know exactly which one that they advertised and took photos of. A wild guess but this is what I used to do when I sold on the Bay.

    Probably an inventory number.

Okay, thanks folks. Consensus is an inventory number. I thought maybe the notations were reference to visible eye appeal such as toning, die marks, etc.

Too high for VAM variety numbers.

I would quess it helps the seller track their inventory.

I used to do the same thing on ebay. In my case it was the number the camera gave the image. When I had several of the same coin listed, it helped me keep everything straight.
I also used the same number in my data base to be sure I flagged the correct coin as sold. Worked really well and I never shipped the wrong coin.
