I have started this series today....starting at the beginning of course...like I do with most of my series collecting. I hate though that I can't tell if its a small or large motto.
Though of course well-worn, I think (despite the small hit inside the shield) that is a handsome circulated example for the grade, and a good album coin. Is that a Dansco 7070 US Type album, or one for two-cent pieces? Edit- Hmm, I guess it wouldn't be the 7070, since that wouldn't mention large vs. small motto.
If you enter this month's giveaway, and happen to win Prize #1 (the "pick your own" prize" lot), I have a free 1865 for you.
I always use this guide when determining small vs. large motto: https://www.ngccoin.com/boards/topi...l-vs-large-motto-variety-posted-by-penny-guy/ (You should be able to tell based on the price you paid, as the small motto is significantly more expensive) Yours is the more common large motto. And I like it, very nice piece.
Now thats a collection. Would trade you 3 brand new cents for that old ratty one. Wash your hands after you handle that coin for Gods sake. Quick send it to me and I'll bury it for ya. Or wrap it in a coin flip and keep it out of harms way
Use the guide I posted above. They call it large and small motto, but there are numerous differences between them besides just the motto.
Nice coin! I think it's kind of funny that they make an album for 2 cent and 3 cent nickels together.
I am with @Prez2 and absolutely love the two cent series. I don’t think we give that one near enough love. Wonderful coin, OP!
I used to own this beastie back in '02-'03-ish. It is one of my many "seller's remorse" coins, and in fact one of the top five US coins I have owned. It was graded before PCGS gave the Cameo designation on proof 2c pieces. I think it had a shot at CAM. It was, in fact, my avatar coin for a time. The subsequent owner took over the avatar and wore it for more than 15 years on the Collectors Universe forums. In fact, he wears the avatar still, though I believe he recently sold the coin.
