I have started a new collection goal of as many foreign coins minted in 1966 (my birth year) as I can find.
While E-Bay has showed me a LOT of cool stuff and I have many on their way to me, I am curious as to see if I can find out (ballpark) how many currencies/denominations were being minted that year.

The United Nations currently recognizes 180 currencies that are used in 195 countries across the world. That, of course, is today. Does anybody know where I can find a list of denominations that were minted in that year?

I know what we had here in the states, penny, nickel, dime, quarter, and half-dollar.

    Thanks in advance!

The best source is the Standard Catalog of World Coins 1901-2000. They put out a revised edition every few years so out of date copies can be picked up pretty inexpensively.

If you go to numista.com and do an advance search by Year, it will show you the 535 coins issued for 1966.

Thanks, Jasanche. I must be doing something wrong. When I do a search I get 909, but not 1966 minted dates.
    Never mind, found it.
    Thanks again!

I looled up mine (1963) and had 384 (including US); but 4 pages of tokens. If you sort by ruling authority the last 2 or 3 pages are the listing of tokens...

    Hey Razz,
I printed all of mine out. Not sure how many pages and tossed the tokens pages out. I now have a GREAT catalog of 1966 coins to look for! I haven't gone back through it thoroughly, but I don't remember seeing any Japanese coins on my listings. I know there are some.

I started a similar collection a few years ago, and very quickly decided to scale it back a bit.
My collection now consists of every silver coin minted in 1966.
I decided if I’m going to do this right, I would only buy uncirculated examples. There were a few coins that was hard to find, and some were rather expensive.

It has been a fun project, and I’m just a few coins away from being complete.

    Good luck with your venture.

    Thank You, Steve.
Chances are probably slim that I will have every one of the denominations, though I will try! LOL:wideyed: Even if I get 2/3rds, it will be an impressive sight to behold.
    Thanks for the encouragement!

Dillan The sky is the limit !

The Canada coins will be easy to find , pick up a set of e bay 20 plus dollars for all 6 coins 4 silver , 1 copper and 1 nickel. The trouble I found with eBay lately is that the shipping prices for some items are ridiculously high . Good luck I would like to do that but most would be silver and too expensive for budget. dillan

That is true! I have seen some really cool coins for less than a dollar, but $4 shipping. It is a marathon, not a sprint. I will do as i can.
    Thanks!

That is exactly why I redirected my 1966 set.
    I couldn’t see paying 5 bucks for a $1 coin.

You may have searched by date, rather than by year. As a result, any coin from countries that use different calendars (like Japan, and most of the Islamic world) wouldn't show up in the results.

    VERY Interesting!
Now I need to go back and check. Thank You TheGame!

Nope, did it by year. I even tried putting in Japan as Issuer, nothing. Very Strange.

Now if I were you, I'd go to my local coin store and start digging away in their foreign coin box. Moreover, if I recall one of the coin dealers from Charleston, South Carolina has a particularly large box of foreign coins with an extremely diverse range of countries and years being present.

Last Update. Figured out the missing ones. I just need to figure out what countries I need to search for. Found Japan and Iran so far. Will keep looking.
