I picked up these 3 Ike’s over a few years. They all were freed from OGP. Which is your favorite and why? Would any of the 3 earn a star at NGC? A) B) C) A) B) C) My favorite of the 3 is coin A. I believe it has the highest grade and best overall eye appeal. The color transitions are smoother than the other 2. It is overall the cleanest in hand and I believe it would earn a star at NGC. I think coin B has the strongest cameo but also has more contact marks than the other 2. It’s colors also seem to pop the most. I think coin C has strong color and somewhat smooth transitions but the coin to me has more of that haze often seen on proof Ike’s which in my opinion makes the colors not pop as strong as the other 2.
I like the "A" obverse and the "B" reverse the best. But, I think you would be wasting your money having them graded. Chris
Coin A would be my choice. Blue rim album toning wouldn’t get the star. It is a very common form of toning for Ikes.
Honestly, none of them are star worthy, and they are all fairly similar in my eyes. I suppose A might be considered the best because it has the least haze.
They are all nice, but I would not count on any receiving a star. I have seen some like this with a star and others without one. Even with the star, Ikes with this look tend to sell for well under $100. So spending ~$20 each on grading fees would not be worth it in my opinion. There is a similar looking one on eBay (not mine) with a star. However, it's hard to tell if the star was for the color or for one side being ultra cameo. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Target-Ton...470785?hash=item4692f88341:g:kcgAAOSw0bpcdL7y
I’ve noticed that when Proof Ikes receive a star it’s usually due to the ultra frosty devices. I have a couple myself. But there are those that get it for color. I also have one of those. If coin A didn’t have those marks it would have a shot, IMO. Here’s a couple of examples from my collection: A super frosty 71-S... The root beer color on this one is stunning. Photos don’t do it justice. The cameo jumps off the coin too.
