One point I want make to collectors who buy circulated, lower priced coins. You are not safe from these counterfeits because the crooks have often targeted these coins. Don't think that you are safe because you are buying inexpensive coins with problems. This has been the bread an butter for these crooks, and they have even gotten some of their products into NCG and PCGS holders. Yes, they have managed to fool the professionals on a small number of occasions.

I am pretty sure that if I could find or make a copy stamp I would do it to every one I came across.

I was at a show today, and one of the dealers had a fake 1857 half cent in his case. It was obviously of Chinese origin. To his credit, he pulled it, but just think if someone didn’t know what to look for...

That’s why I put so much importance on learning the general characteristics of the Chinese fakes. In the end, it doesn’t really matter where they came from, but since the Chinese fakes have so thoroughly inundated the market, it is imperative to be able to recognize them.

The number of Chinese counterfeits out there is really unequaled by any other emission. Just look at the two links I provided and see the apalling number of the orders each fake received. They are cheap and accessible. THAT is precisely why they are so dangerous.

Dangerous indeed, but the individual collector must take responsibility. Do their 'due diligence' and do the research. We, as a community, can hope to enlighten them, but we can't save them (collectors) from themselves unless they do proper research..........

But those features aren't necessarily unique to China. There are counterfeits coming from Eastern Europe and other places in Asia with poor quality control and rogue methods.

Sure, but the overall fabric, including things that I did not mention (lake effect, etc.), is indicative of Chinese fakes. As @johnmilton said, the Chinese fakes have a very consistent look.

It may take some a while to figure out the look but it is how much we study.
I know it is repetitive, yet we can have some much better conversations if we all did a little more.
