No $20 Redesign in 2020 Now...

I'm not taking sides with the political issues on this thread. IMO @BunkerTrapMan, your comment is very disrespectful to the millions of young men and women who recently served and currently serve in all the branches of the United States Armed Forces. All were volunteers. Many of our "(younger generation)" died and many are severely disabled. They, along with the majority of our youngsters are not "Millennial PC soft stuff". It's Fleet Week here in NYC (and perhaps other places) and have watched many of them walking around Manhattan in Full Dress Uniform and have nothing but respect for all of them.

This is not terribly accurate. Quite a few countries around the world use the USD as their primary/official currency or their de facto currency in day-to-day transactions. Examples that come to mind include Ecuador, El Salvador, Panama, and Zimbabwe.

It is also the currency of choice for numerous countries in the Caribbean. It is worth noting that Ecuador and El Salvador are particularly fond of using dollar coins while countries in the Caribbean that use dollars will often use dollar bills until they literally begin to disintegrate.

 

Yes, I agree. I was overlooking those few countries that have converted to the dollar and very near economies since in total they are not much economically. Not being mean, but total GDP not very large. I am sure smaller notes circulate in Canada and Mexico as well but not dicernibly. However, for most of the world, I stand by my assertion it is meant new $100's, and any other series or denomination is wanted less and discounted more as a result.

 

Personally I would have no issue with a re-issue of this style; HOWEVER, be prepared for the AVALANCHE of criticisms EDITED: Political Discussion

OK, since this thread has gone off the rails.
New is not always good. I'd like to see some of the classic ABNCo vignettes on the redesigned $20.00. Some of those vignettes truly works of art.

Personally, I’d like to see a return to a Lady Liberty, Stars and Stripes on a shield, maybe throw an eagle or two in there. It worked for a long time.

 

Probably not. There is a lot of leniency here that should not have been overlooked. Most of it has nothing to do with numismatics or paper money and quite frankly I don't know why it was allowed to go on. What a shame the moderators didn't stop it and allowed some of the hateful comments. What a shame.

@thomas mozzillo no disrespect intended to our Military. Both myself and my deceased husband were Veterans so I would appreciate you not riding that horse, that was not my intended target. I have tons of respect for our Military Service Personnel.
You are entitled to your opinion and just understand that your opinion is simply that, I have never asked anyone not to express theirs as that is your right. Just as it is my right to express mine.

No one is denying that one has a right to express their opinion to anyone as long as it doesn't violate the rules if posted. If one is that intent on expressing their right to say whatever they wish, however they wish, use the CONVERSATION function on your profile page, not the REPLY POST function which forces ones opinion on everyone unnecessarily. Moderators can not read your conversations, but the respondent can report it to the moderators so think before sending.

Forget Harriet Tubman. Put a "Medal of Honor" winner on the bill be they white, black, yellow, etc. Just change the image every few years to another medal winner.

 

I've always been partial to depictions of Lady Liberty on coins and currency as it's more of a concept and with her likeness being open to interpretation has resulted in some beautiful imagery over the years

 

I couldn't agree more -- and yet, when designers have dared to "interpret" Lady Liberty into slightly different body proportions or facial features in the last few years, there have been shouts of outrage. I like the idea of new designs, but the response from the collecting community has been pretty depressing.

 

Going back to the original topic, I would love to see Harriet Tubman on a $20 bill. She not only rescued slaves through the Underground Railroad but was also a Union spy and scout who was the first woman to lead an armed expedition during the Civil War. She did all of that despite a debilitating head injury that she received when a slave owner threw a metal weight at her. Definitely an American who we should all be proud of regardless of political persuasion.

Andrew Jackson’s influence on our country was significant and I generally prefer to avoid rigidly holding historical figures to our current political norms. History is messy, and the arguments around that are beyond the scope of this forum. But Harriet Tubman was also significant. The best option may be to feature different people on our currency every few years. That would promote both historical awareness and pride in the great things that Americans have accomplished.
