I like shiney coins in my old age. Living on SSI, I am rather limited on my buying power but I do love a nice piece of silver and I love the Kennedy halves. I try to keep my buying between $16.00-$20.00 each shipped on the 90% Silver Proof Kennedy Half Dollar PCGS PR69 DCAM. (ebay) Not even worried about the dates except from the silver content point. I haven't a clue what PCGS charges for these slabs. Do you think I am wasting my money? You won't hurt my feelings. LOL. Would I be better off just spending in the $8.00 shipped range for naked, not so great, Franklins and Walking Libertys. I just can't afford to be wasteful. Not crying, just stating a fact. Your input appreciated. Enjoy your collecting guys and gals, I sure am. Gosh. I sure hope I haven't posted this before.

If picking up these Kennedy coins brings you happiness and you're able to afford it (i.e. you're not forgoing food/health/essentials), then I think you're perfectly fine. Sure you could collect lower condition coins for less, but if those aren't your passion, then there is no point in doing so.

By the way, if you watch enough auctions, some of those silver Kennedy coins can be won for $10-$15 (although $15-$20 is the more common range). Maybe try to pick one date and see if you can win an auction for even less as a small challenge.

As to the cost for slabbing, for a general submission it costs more than what you're paying (around $20 per coin with shipping and other fees for the cheaper tier). Bulk submissions (where one sends in a large quantity) greatly reduce the grading fees. Most often, people try to get enough 70 graded examples to make their money and then sell off the 69 graded ones for whatever they can get.

If it gives you pleasure in buying "naked, not so great, Franklins and Walking Libertys" for $8.00 shipped then by all means do so. Buy a few coin albums and start a collection. You probably won't get any key coins for that price but maybe later, if you can afford to do so, start adding semi-key & key coins. As @ddddd suggested, keep an eye out for the lower priced silver Kennedy Halves.
