I asked a representative from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization about the current status of the Money and Medals programme that got all those countries over the years to put food-related designs on their coinage and medals. The M&M program started in 1968, but I was not sure about when it ended, if it had ended, only rumors that it had stopped. A user here I think told me it closed down in 2004.

    So, I asked the FAO!

Here is the first reply that I got from the FAO:

"Thank you for your interest in FAO and the Money and Medals Programme. I am the only one still working in FAO that worked on for many years with the programme. Unfortunately, it closed down about 7 years ago [that would have been 2011]. FAO is not selling or dealing with any medals or coins."

And then the representative got back to me later after asking around some more:

"Please kindly note I have been informed from the Legal office of the following:
'The Money and Medals Programme has not been actively advertised over the past years, it is our understanding from a review of the records that the Programme has not been officially closed.'"

Well, that clears that up. I guess it hasn't closed down, they just aren't promoting it any more!

    V. Kurt Bellman Yes, I'm blunt! Get over your "feeeeelings".

Many people find drawing and sculpting hands especially difficult. Somebody's showing off.

Interesting news. :) This is a (short) earlier topic about the program, from a couple of years ago https://www.cointalk.com/threads/ex...oins-magazine-on-un-fao-related-issues.32878/ where I posted a link to an image database compiled by Harold Angel (Angielczyk), then in charge of the program. Unfortunately that link - at least the guest access - does not work any more.

But of course there are other coins about fighting hunger, such as this one (Germany 2012) or that one (Italy 2004; the other side is the common reverse). And many more, just not as a FAO program ...

As for the piece from Poland, they made quite a lot of money with such próba issues in those years - not actually coins but "alternative" designs. :)

I am also interested in the medals. I have 2 FAO World Food Day medal dated 2011, one in bronze, one in silver. I’d be interested in obtaining medals I don’t have.

The Medals are all now in private hands and out in the market, I guess, so you won't find any more being issued by FAO. At least according to what they told me. Visit eBay or perhaps a retailer that specialises in medals...

Hi everyone, new to the forum and have been struggling to find much on these medals that look to be FAO Medals ? Would appreciate any help, both silver hallmarked on edge and about measure about 63 mm each.

Yes, clearly visible now. :) While I don't really know much about FAO medals, let's see who is depicted here ... According to the inscription, the one on the left features Olave Baden-Powell.

And the medal on the right has two names. The depicted woman is Attiya Inayatullah, but we also have a signature: M. TZOBANAKIS. That would be the Greek sculptor Manolis Tzobanakis; he is briefly mentioned in this file for example.

Edit - This page, a private project, lists more FAO medals. Maybe you can find yours by going through all the Ceres references ...

Thanks for the information Christian. I'm not sure how many were made but have only seen one other image of them.
