Here's a good one. I had a 1953 Proof Franklin half up for sale and slabbed by ANACS. Someone reported it as a fake and ebay took it down and sent me a nasty gram. Really?? But they did not take down the medals made by the American Mint that looked like actual coins. Go figure.
Was a fellow this morning that posted a copy of a Spanish Reale. You can go to any coastal gift shop in my state and buy Little gift treasure chests filled with these things. They are marketed as a gift. But when one goes astray and falls into the hands of a hungry new collector, he then believes he has found the golden chalice. As rabid as people are these days to strike it rich I believe if it don’t look like Monopoly money, then don’t market it. Period.
Yep and they are available in gift shops in Portsmouth, N.H., Newport, R.I., Virginia Beach, Va. and The Outer Banks, N.C. Four places I have frequented.
I'm gonna say yes, that wacked out fad is still in full flower. Now I'm gonna sit and wait for the inevitable backlash that's coming.
In Italy they make these very nice pre-1945 Italian reproduction coins that are called "riconio" and they are sold as being reproductions. These coins are not marked "copy". The problem is I see some of them being sold on American Ebay as being authentic.
The other day I tried to list "Autographed copy of Penny Prices by Noyes," and eBay kicked it out and would not let me list it. I was attempting to list in 2 categories. Coin supplies/albums, and Large Cents. It seems "copy" is on their banned words list...
Most of the baseball crowd doesn't get it. Here is a quote today from Beckett's website: "I don't see what the problem is with the Brett card. Clear states in the title that it is a REPRINT. If he was trying to sell it as an original and it was fake that would be different. A lot of buyers like these 'cause it makes think look like they have the real thing when there is no way they could afford one."
Did you reply to them that your coin is not a fake, certified to be genuine by a legitimate grading company, and perhaps they should get some coin experts before making incorrect decisions. This company is headed for some rough times. You can't operate a business this way. They just take the word of some disgruntled nobody without doing any fact checking at all? Glad I stopped doing business with them.
Again, this is no different from what many embrace in this hobby. The approach, excuse, everything the same.
Books, You know why this is, right? We have more data than we can EVER do anything meaningful with, so we use algorithms instead of intelligence.
No, I did not confront them about it, takes too much time, and it's usually a no win effort with these people as they really have no one that seems to have a clue about real from copy or counterfeit.
I recently, had a run in with a young man who was selling a copy cc Morgan on e-Bay. The bidders, were paying top dollar for the coin, so I told him I didn't care for his unethical behavior. He rationalized it, buy saying the coin had "copy" printed right on it, so it was" let the buyer beware" sort of deal. He even threatened to kick my old ass for interfering. Do you have anymore information about the e-Bay ban of these coins. Thank you, d.hartleydesmia.
Report the seller to Ebay, call them and explain. Ebay has plenty of crooked sellers like him running scams to burn buyers. Ebay needs to do a better job of cracking down on them and weeding them out.
Do these copy and tribute coins have much value in the market? Is it worth collecting them too? I saw a hobo nickel copy for sale and I thought it was really cool looking. I had never seen one before and the history behind the originals is very interesting.
