You need to read the nickel Best to read Lehigh post full steps / full bands Paul has several post going in details , so I need not post it again. There's also a book out of print now on the full step Jefferson nickel.
I will add this.. not to degrade the specimen but Segs grading isn't that great. You coin is very nice as far as FS go it wouldn't make it on the top 3 TPG's
I'm definitely no expert but as I do agree with the grade I can't believe the description is claiming Full Steps. Yes it has 5 steps but also "bridges" which as I understand it are weak strikes or damage connecting steps. The slab description seems to be misleading IMO. But it is still a nice coin,
Yes, Obi-Wan Kenobi , you have taught me well. Doubled Die it is-- times two > DDO-002 DDR-005 Its funny how i learned in my infancy, that 1 way to spot MD was if it occurs on both sides of the coin its NOT a doubled die. This is simply not true!!
Larry Briggs runs SEGS and he knows his Jefferson Nickels but I have never been a fan of the way he applies his full steps designation. He will state the coin has 5 full steps, noting that the coin has bridges or nicks, which essentially negates the full step designation. If this coin were graded by either NGC or PCGS, it would be a straight graded solid MS66.
Well from what ive gathered, they minted 3.5 million nickels in 1939. Roughly 2 million were Rev of 40 and 1.5 million Rev of 38. Also, ALL the 1939 p,d,s type 1/2 nickels would be a fun little subset to put together. You could expand that into 5FS 6FS & NFS. Just that one date would be a HUGE under taking!! Especially for someone with limited disposable income..... Interesting Factoid- 1939 type2 ms66 6FS Is valued in the NGC price guide at> $1500!!! MS67 NFS is valued at $100 and to date there have been NONE graded ms67 6FS!! Something to keep an eye out for & the $30 I shelled out for this coin was well worth the crash course i got for this date/mm/type.
