Those 9's need to be just about touching the inner rim.

I swear there is an "in-between" 1979 style. I went through my kid's "dinosaur bank" in which my mom, his grandmother, stuffed every dollar coin she ever saw. This was the peak era of their circulation, mostly. There were ABOUT 140 Susies in there and a smattering of Sacs. I found 3 solid wide-rims, about 100 solid narrow 1979's of various mints, a few 1980's and 1999's, and I have set aside 6 or so 1979-P's that I'm having trouble deciding WHICH they are. Anyone ever read anything on a "third style"?

Yes you want the numbers to be closer to the rim as Kurt mentioned.

Not a wide rim as others have stated but keep looking as I have personally found around 100 or so and some go on eBay for 5-10$ or more.

I sent the best of the wide rims I found in that dinosaur bank to NGC, and it came back an MS64.

I've pulled out 5 or 6 wide rims in all my searches. They are nice enough looking coins (minus her face) but I don't think they'd ever be valuable enough to actually send in and have graded.

So maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me but I'm starting to agree with Kurt that there is an "in-between". I pulled up both the OP's photo and the photos that Michael posted and the OP's coin looks closer to the wide-rim than the near-rim but it's just not quite there.

I have a 1980 SBA where the "1" is almost touching the rim, but the "0" appears a farther out. Or maybe it's just my poor eyesight. IMG_0079.JPG
I never really thought of collecting "Carter Dollars", but who knows? These were in pocket change and tossed into a bowl because I didn't like having them (too often confused with quarters)

The 1980's are wide rim!! In 1979 some of the 1979's were struck with 1980 dies and that is how we got 1979 wide rims.

See? That's what I get for meddling in areas outside of my experience. I think I'll just go back to world coins now :)

Yup, all dates except 1979 are "wide rim", even the 1999's.

Willey. Never QUIT THE GAME. If it looks funny. Save it. If you find a good on then you got that and roll up your near misses and celebrate

I so agree with you. Like those 1992 closed AM's. Optical tripping
