Ro1974's Nero coin got me thinking about this very large antique print that's dominated my workroom for decades. It's titled "In The Time Of Nero." It's signed Forty, Roma. Oddly, I've had this in my collection long before I started collecting Roman coins. The artist seems to me to be an Alma-Tadema imitator. The provenance is curious. This image used to hang outside Earl Long's office in the old statehouse in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. That would date it in the late 20's to early 30's. Earl Long was "The Kingfish" Huey Long's brother. (There was a Paul Newman movie made about Louisiana governor Earl Long in 1989 titled "Blaze". Blaze was the name of a notorious stripper that Long was involved with. Typical Louisiana politics! It's an amusing, but very idealized, movie.) I think it is significant that there are black slaves depicted in this image. I don't know if anyone here will find this interesting, but I consider this an accessory to my Roman collection. Does anyone else have things that are not coins but enhance your collection? Like a statue perhaps...anything...Cheers! Please click on images to see full size. .
I'm not sure what's going on in that picture...but right now I don't have anything that augments my collection beyond a few books.
A princess (perhaps), is approaching a royal barge while attendants scatter roses at her feet. There is flute music. Slaves follow her behind holding an umbrella to shield her pale face from the sun while attending to her every need. Very Roman, and very romantic to me.
I have a few: Bust of Alexander, Statuette of Augustus in toga, several paintings from Asia (Zhang dynasty Emperor, Koi in pond), Korean Masks, Chinese Bronze cauldron shaped like a bull, etc. etc. that would take me forever to take pics. "Schtuff" I collected over the years in my travels. I have probably given more of the stuff away than I kept. This Bronze that I have, I think is kinda cool:
That's a kool painting.. I am a avid lover of paintings, coins of Nero and your wonderful state and it's people
Very cool!!! I really like the added features, artistry, artifacts and other things collectors utilize that enhance the enjoyment and presentation of ancient coins.
Great painting Macromius , painter surely was inspired by dutch painter Alma Tadema. Got a few posters hanging in my office to keep focused on ancient coins:
