The New York Times had to publish a correction today:

"An article on Tuesday about the theft of a 221-pound coin known as the Big Maple Leaf from the Bode Museum in Berlin erroneously attributed a distinction to the coin. While it was the world’s largest gold coin when it was issued, in 2007, that distinction is now held by the Australian Kangaroo One Tonne Gold Coin, minted in 2011."

I did not realize it was an ancient coin. Must have taken some skill to mint it back then.

If I were giving legal advise to the criminals, were I as disreputable an attorney as Saul Goodman (which I'm not), I'd tell them to melt it. Gold is easy to melt, and once molten it cant be identified...specially if you add a hint of copper to it to make it less pure than the 99.99% purity that is unique to the both the Canadian and S. African mints (as the US adds copper to their bullion coins and cast them overweight), and jewelers do the same to jewelry grade gold.

And again, were I disreputable and advising these criminals, I'd also have them dispose of small quantities of the gold via private sales hundreds of miles away from the area (and burry the money in the woods), so that if they are raided all the cops would find are a quantity of gold that doesnt match the purity of the stolen gold, and doesn't match the quantities of the stolen gold (and thus it can't be proven thats the stolen gold). To that end, probably a good idea to burry some of the recast gold bars too and turn some into jewelry. I'd open a jewelry making company (in paper only) as a front to provide an excuse for having a large quantity of gold too. Then a few years from now begin to slowly sell the recast bars and jewelry...but keep it at a reasonably low level as to not raise suspicion. After all, one can live off of that well for the rest if their lives without getting greedy or sloppy.

Good thing then that I'm not crooked and I refuse to give them such advise. Now remember, when in trouble...better call Saul! :D

In case anyone is interested in knowing, that much gold is 4,300,000 USD at today's prices. However, if you launder that gold through the jewelry market as jewelry, you could potentially increase the profit to 12,000,000 USD or more. Something for the Canadian thieves to think about...

Apparently someone else has not seen any of the other topics about this very case. ;) I know some or many of you ancient guys only read and write in this forum, nothing wrong with that. Except when it results in duplicates (triplicates, quadruplicates ...) about a "coin" that is not even ancient.
