That's one of the New York Hoard Lipanoff forgeries. Here's an overview. One of the characteristics of the Lipanoff forgeries was that the eyes had bulging lines around them, to make them look like eyes, as opposed to eye holes in a mask.

considering how many cool coins you've posted here, the revelation that the first coin you purchased is was a fake really doesn't seem like much to fret over ro. how did you discover it was a fake?

sorry...i missed the other thread until just now. i understand.

I am not certain. This series was faked in 1990 and published in The Celator as "The Black Sea Hoard". Wayne Sayles wrote, as I recall, that a giveaway is that the eyes look more like eyes than eye slots in a helmet. I have not seen enough genuine and false specimens to be confident I understand the eye slots.

I learned mine was fake when I proudly posted it on a site and Barry Murphy immediately found stylistic problems. Unfortunately problems of style that are obvious to someone like Barry are difficult to explain to a new collector without a background in art history, and I wasn't able to learn specific "tells" from him.

Further inspection at extreme magnification revealed that the surfaces don't look like any genuine coins. Something strange is giving the appearance of advanced age.

I recently got burned with a purchase of a Apollonia Pontika drachm. It is an obverse match with "specimen 38" noted in that link. From a VCoins seller.

@ro1974 This hobby is, above all else, supposed to be fun. If you are not having fun and learning, if collecting coins and collecting likes causes you stress, then you should not be doing it. Life is too short, go find a hobby that you enjoy!

I wish you the best either way!

Vcoins sellers are supposed to pledge to a lifetime guarantee of authenticity. Return the coin, and if the seller gives you any problems, remind them of the pledge.

Thanks. It is a little intimidating to me to call a seller out for selling something that I consider a fake based on my own research.

I contacted the seller and noted that I was a little uneasy about this one. His response was that he had no issue with taking a return if I had any doubts. I am going to send it back.
