Tibor's Denar Giveaway Contest status: OPEN Drawing: pending; on or after 1 December 2025 Winner: pending Shipping status: pending Winner's receipt: pending This 1505 Hungarian silver denar was donated by Louie J, aka @tibor, who, as you may know, specializes in early dated coins. By this I mean coins with actual dates on them, from the early 1500s and before. Prior to the 1600s, European coins were usually undated, but this piece clearly bears the date 1505 above the coat of arms on one side, and the Virgin Mary and baby Christ child on the other. Want it? Just speak up, and be sure to thank @tibor. He also donated 1537 and 1538 denars, which I will be giving away on Collectors Universe.
Thanks Mister @tibor for your contribution to this contest!! I am definitely hungry. Hungry for this terrific coin. It would be my oldest coin, beside an ancient that I have, I think anyways. (c'mon lucky number 2).
I'm in! I was just recently admiring some of @tibor 's early dated coins on the World Coins Time Machine thread. Thanks for the very generous giveaway!
Thank You lordmarcovan and tibor for this giveaway. I don't collect foreign coins, but this would be a neat coin to have. Certainly would be my oldest.
My question is regarding the date. Is this 1505 the same number from the same calendar that we use today? And then what are the oldest dated coins? 1300s? 1400s?
Yes, that’s the same Anno Domini calendar we use today. The earliest dated European coin is, I believe, from Roskilde in Denmark, dated 1234, of which only a few examples exist. (@tibor will correct me on that if I’m wrong.)
Not something I collect but I will put an entry in for @Tall Paul , very kind of you @tibor for the giveaway!
I’m onboard!…it would be my first Hungarian coin and my third-oldest. ( I have a Alex. the Gr./336BC tetradrachm and an AR Constantine) Special thanks to @tibor …Spark
