It is a bit of a trap, for if you sell them all then it is unlikely that you will drift-back every now and then to restart your collection from scratch, but if you keep your coins, then every now and then you may feel weak and you may wander-back for another taste ...... tough call .... it's a bit like deciding to quit smoking, but you'll keep a carton of smokes in the closet just in case, eh?

Oh, and will your coins be worth more in 20 years? ... sure, most likely ... but maybe the coin-rules will have changed and they'll be illegal to own, or some crazy rule like that (or maybe all of us coin-geezers will have passed-away and the new folks may not even know what money is, right? ...... I mean how popular are stamps nowadays? ... I'm betting that stamp collecting took a major hit when people stopped writing and mailing letters by hand)

=> oh, but before all of the young folks start to turn on me => I realize that there are a lot of YN's out there who are just starting to collect ancient coins (you dudes are awesome, but you're probably a pretty rare breed nowadays) ... once carrying actual money peters-off and everybody pays for stuff with their fingerprints, then the thought of collecting coins may take a sharp down-turn?) ...... hey, I hate to be a pessimist when I'm trying to read the future, but is an option, eh?

Smeag => tough call, but I wish you good health & great happiness no matter which avenue you choose, my friend!

I wasn't sure what to say to you. You are young enough to enjoy traveling, and so you should. Coins can be picked up again many years from now. I think you might find it hard to replace the coins you have now down the line. Who knows what the MOUs will be 20 years in the future. Put them somewhere safe, like a bank deposit box, out of sight.

To me: Costs are sunk, and you have enjoyed the hobby for the education and the personal entertainment. The Collection is a small portable last-ditch asset should you ever need to liquidate in a dire emergency. Store it out of sight and in a secure spot. Forget about it in your mind.

Enjoy your pursuits and focus on other things that you want in life (Your Travel Dream, a partner, another hobby, etc.) Later in your life, you can be "surprised" if/when you "discover" the collection again, but also not have regrets that you let something go from the collection.

If at that time of rediscovery you have completely lost interest, you could liquidate, or pass on to your kids / friends / grandkids whom may enjoy it. Otherwise, you may rekindle the joy and have a great time with the collection again!

And (just to add) when I look back at what I bought 20/25 years ago and what it would set me back now, I just couldn't afford them

Greg, I've given it more thought. Disregard my initial advice to keep only three of your favorites. Keep them all. You'll regret selling them later on! With the looming cultural property laws it might not be easy to replace them.

it is ok to sell some, but if your favorite ones are very scarce and are hard to come by not showing up on the market very often say 10-20 years... then those are the ones you keep.

Hey Smeag => perhaps you should give-away your cool coins to a few of your coin-friends? .... sometimes doing things for others is good karma, right?

Ummm, here's an idea => why don't you let me take care of your Roman Ruler collection? (what could happen)

I agree that you probably shouldn't sell everything but perhaps it wouldn't be a bad idea to sell some. Many emperors are easy to come by and while import restrictions could theoretically eventually make this more difficult, we're a long, long ways away from $10K Antoninus Pius denarii.

I'd say, if you have coins which you feel are easily replaceable, it would be worth selling them in a way in which you can ensure you won't lose your shirt (i.e. privately or with reserves, as they've been purchased relatively recently).

Personally, I find myself regularly looking at my collection and saying, "Am I happy with this coin and do I intend to keep it for X years?" If not, and if I feel as if the funds could be used more productively elsewhere, I'm not opposed to "trimming the fat".

If I were building a set of the emperors, I would focus my funds first on only the tougher ones, then eventually flesh it out with more common examples. Or, if I hadn't succeeded in adding an example for a while and have to scratch that itch, I'd have sufficient funds in reserve to cross one off the list.

I'm not wise enough to advise you either way. However, personally if I were at your place and conditions I would certainly keep them even though I decided to quit collecting for ever. I would keep them as a souvenir from a TRAVEL to the ancient realm and nicest hobby. Good luck either way brother GH.

Hard to say which is the correct answer, to sell or not. I feel that if your not emotionally attached to your collection then selling your collection is not a problem. Obviously, if one thinks down the road they may start buying the same coins again, then its redundant to sell.

Years ago I sold of a lot of my modern coins because I needed the funds. A lot of the coins are ones I will never buy back either due to the pattern or price. Most of the stuff I wouldn't care about but there are a few that I wished I hadn't sold.
