Hey all, Let me just start off by saying if this is the wrong section, sorry. My thinking was it was more paper money then a foreign coin. If a mod wants to move it that's fine by me. Anyway back to the note. So I work at a local supermarket and we have one of those Coinstar machines. And whenever I go on break I'll do a quick check of them and if I find anything, it's usually some foreign coins. So a couple days ago I go to check it and I see in the top tray where you put the coins to pour them in this Un Peso note. I barely know anything about US Paper let alone Mexican so can anyone tell me anything about this note? Also side note, it's says American Bank Note Company on the bottom (see photos) which makes me think this may be fake (movie prop?); but, like I said I'm not an expert. Thanks for any help.
It isn't worth much, maybe a quarter as the old peso lost all it's value in the 1980s. But it is a lovely note from when American Banknote had Mexico as it's largest printing contract - the circular stone on the front is the Quetzalcoatl calendar stone that is well known in Mexican history. The reverse is of "La Angel del Libertad" in Mexico City, literally the angel of liberty - she appears on many Mexican coins and pieces of paper money even currently.
It's worth less than a quarter. A current peso is worth about 5 cents US now. Mexico dropped at least 3 zeros since this was current. Collector value is way more than the fraction of a cent cash value.
There ARE Mexican notes that worths more, particularly the higher denomination, and, even from that, a small percentage of, but this isn't one of them.
