Just saw an advertisement for that in my browser (not from this site). I bet you could get some pretty good deals there. Anyone done that?

nope, and I do believe that most of these "police auctions" are bogus, anyway

Thats why auctioneers pay money to market that BS. People think they might get a good deal. its just marketing trick. In Chicago,
and I assume other big citys, there are people who sell speakers out of the back of a van. They pretend that they are stolen, and you are getting a good deal. However they are ussually home made knock offs.

And even if they aren't bogus you will find that often you won't get any better prices than at an "estate" auction where there always seem to be people unknowledgeable about coins who bid the things up to levels well above the market rate.

And really, if a criminal has coins that are seized how much do you want to be that they're counterfeits?

I think they are usually stolen, and the owners can't be traced, or in some cases purchased with drug proceeds and therefor forfeited.

Yet another reason to inventory and photograph your collection regularly

The only thing I've ever bought at a police auction is a cruiser. It ran pretty well for a few years, but the mileage on those things doesn't reflect the engine wear as they just sit and idle a lot of the time.

And once you fixed the cigarette lighter, it was the new Bluesmobile? :p

If you are referring to that police auctions website, a lot of stuff on there isn't even police seized..... Much of it is marketed through that site, priced higher than retail, higher even than eBay!

Suppose you learn something new every day. I never went to the site, just saw that advertisement. Seemed like a pretty good idea - until now. :)

Yep, and with ridiculous shipping (common date Morgans, opening bid of $23 with $9.95 shipping); pretty much the same for their "sister" site, propertyroom.com; best to stick to the 'Bay, where at least you can sneak in a win once in awhile (for less than melt) and have buyer protection.

9.95 shipping is just ridiculous and a fraud in itself, but people will still pay it and not blink an eye.
