My wife makes fun of me and will never will understand why somebody would pay $100 for a penny, which is one of my favorite things to do.
Haha, owning a penny worth $100 is fun always, p!ssing my wife off can be too but that fun is always temporary
Im not trying to be s*xtist, but, it seems that a VERY small percent of coin collectors are women, it it just me?
my wife has no real issues with my coin collecting and she likes to look at new ones i get.she is trying to learn about it so i usually sit down with her with new coins and books in hand so she can see what's going on.if buying or bidding on one i show her in several books the value of the item.
My wife tolerates it, calls it my "dorky-ness" and continually asks me their value and then immediately the inevitable "so when are you going to sell them" to which my reply of "never" is not well received. I try to tell her they're an investment, but since I won't sell anything I don't have 2 of, she gets pretty upset. To add to the matter, my oldest is taking a keen interest in coins so it looks like she'll be dealing with this problem and my collection for a looooong time.
Mine actually wanted to go to the recent Dallas ANA show with me last weekend. Luckily (and sadly) I had a work emergency and couldn't go. She is the worst when it comes to haggling, she always announces things like "O haven't you been looking for that one for a long time?" and "That's less than the other dealer wanted for it." It's like bringing someone to a football game that has never seen football before and having to spend the whole time explaining the rules to them. Otherwise, she is pretty supportive and at least pretends to listen when I talk about coins. But I bet she is really thinking about shoes (she has over a hundred pairs?) when I start talking about coins, similar to when I think about coins when she talks about shoes.
i am one of the lucky ones, the ball and chain has a u.s. type set done minus the seated dollars cause she hasn't found any "nice enough" to go with the rest of her set and she is in the process of putting together a vg/f capped dime set. she also doesnt mind when i drop hundreds of dollars on 90%. we also know different areas of the hobby. i am 1892 and after (with the exception of morgans) and she is 1891 and earlier
I told my wife she needed a hobby, I took her to the coin shop with me 3 weeks ago.(first mistake) Now anything with queen elizibeth on it she wants, including what was once in my collection.
When I sell something for outrageous money, it amazes my girlfriend that someone would pay that kind of money for a penny, nickel or whatever. She now finds hoards for me to buy.
I always thought that's where the term Collector/Investor came from. Collector is the husband and investor is what he tells the wife he is.
I pretty much say the same thing. I collect silver coins and I told her its no different than having a savings account and I have a 50/50 chance of the coins increasing in value rather than the joke of a rate the bank gives as a rate. Its also nice to see and hold my coins rather than looking only at a number that states how much money I have looking at my online banking.
She even works at a bank and I don't think she could win that argument with me. Plus she knows the rates are crap. If I ever sell my junk silver she'll change her tune I am sure when I make money off of it, if I want to sell it. I just like having it.
My bank pays .01% for savings. If you only break even selling a collection you still had a saving account and hobby. Of course you still have the risk that you'll sell at a loss. And we're not too big to fail.
At least there is the joy that comes with collecting rather than just hoarding money away into an account that is pretty much dormant.
My wife has no cares about my coin spending as long as there is money in the bank when she wants to buy something for herself. Every once in a while she'll see a coin that she likes and I MUST buy it for her.
She thinks I spend too much, but recognizes two facts... #1. I could easily recoup most of what I've spent if I were to liquidate everything. I'd actually probably double my money at a minimum, lol. #2. Knows I will probably not sell anything until I'm down to my last cent.
