    Hey dimeguy,

For your state quarters are you doing them all proof or just p/d uncirculated. And likewise I'm also doing the presidential dollars. All and all I've spent the last few months catching up on my "modern" coinage.

This probably sounds silly, but I made a rule to worry about proofs for a complete set for modern (post 1964) coins. In that regard, my Prez, Sac, and State quarters are P, D, S with S being clad. (Don't get me wrong, I have the silver, but I consider those more of a bullion buy). For the State Parks I will seek the S circulation strikes (even though obtaining 20 quarters for one year is ridiculous in my opinion!) With the Frankies, Barbers, and Wheats I still collect all available mint marks, though don't stress about obtaining a proof of each year. I also find my approach nice in that I have a chance to collect some modern series as well as some pre-modern, basically whatever my mood suits me for at the given time.

About your Prez collection, bothering with the whole type A and B business?

What series or type set are you working on?
Well, I just completed an FE/IH set (minus the 1856 and 1877)
and have just started a morgan date set
    How far along are you?
I was 5/32s into the set but sending my 1890 out for slabbing brought it down to 4/32

How long do you think it will take you to complete the series or type set?
like the FEs/IHs there will be a couple of coins i just can't afford (1895 comes to mind 1st) but hope to have it done come the end of 2013

Why did you choose that series or type set?
I have always liked the morgan series but could never afford them as a kid collecting. I can now (almost)

What obstacles stand in your way to completing the series or type set?

As mentioned above certain dates have premiums that just will not fit within my budget at present but then again you never know what might happen.

No I'm not dealing with the whole a/b business on the pres dollars. I'm just doing a P mint business strike set. as far as the states I have a tube set of p and d au stat quarters that I still need to album. I have this itch to buy them in proof but can't get myself to scratch it for some reason. For the territory quarters I am doing the proof sets.

I'm working on Franklin Halves. I have been doing it since around '06-'07, but got serious last year. I have all the business strikes, raw and BU and mostly from original rolls. I'm working on the Proofs right now and have the '55-'63 flat pack proof sets. So I am missing those 5 early proofs out of the total 49 coins (35 business strikes, 14 proofs). The obstacle will be first deciding whether to get the full proof sets or just the loose Franklin proofs. (And also whether to get those still in the boxes/plastic or those already taken out and holdered in those old Capital acrylics). Either way I go, money will then become an obstacle. At least the money won't be that bad for the '54, but the others, WOW. I probably won't finish for a couple of years, which should be enough time to put away a few bucks here and there to save up. I chose it because my grandmother always gave me a Franklin half or two whenever I went on trips to her home in Miami during my childhood summer vacations. They bring back great memories of fishing and swimming all day and not having to worry about homework!

That one is a toughie. I have been looking for the right one with the right looks with a decent price. Extremely hard to find. The ones on ebay are usually overpriced. I watch heritage to see if I can find one to crack out. This is one of the 3 I need to complete the 1793 to 1857 dansco album. Then there are maybe 3-4 coins (common dates) that I will probably replace.

What series or type set are you working on?
I'm currently working on my British Pennies from 1902-1970

    How far along are you?
It's really hard to say. Date-wise I'm probably about 80% done, but so far I've been doing quite a bit of hole filling. I've come down to my last couple of coins, most of which are early proof coins. As it stands mosts of the coins I have are not in the best condition, and once I finish with all of the dates I'd love to upgrade the coins, but it may be out of my budget to do this.

How long do you think it will take you to complete the series or type set?
Most of my remaining dates I think I'll be able to get within the coin show or two I attend, but the proofs may take quite a bit longer. I've probably been working on this set for about 6 months now and I was only able to find my first proof for this set this past weekend at the Dallas ANA show.

Why did you choose that series or type set?
I chose these because I wanted a bit of a challenge. Living in the United States it is quite easy to come across US coinage, but if I wanted to collect an entire set of foreign coins it would take a little bit of work. If I had decided to collect US cents, it is not a matter of being able to find the coins I want, but rather whether or not I can afford it. At almost any coin show I can probably find all of they key dates I wanted to for the US cents, but for the British pennies they're a little bit harder to come by and I feel like completing this set will be more rewarding.

What obstacles stand in your way to completing the series or type set?
Like I mentioned, the availability of these coins, at least where I live is not too great. This biggest challenge is finding the coins that I need, not the value of those coins (unless I decide to make the collection 100% UNC, then I'd have a major problem on my hands :D).

What series or type set are you working on?
Working on two. One is getting the set of the "12 Caesars".

Next set is on Roman Empresses Lucilla & Crispina.

    How far along are you?
12 Caesars: I currently need 3 emperors to complete it.
Lucilla & Crispina: Almost done with Crispina since she doesnt have many reverses but Lucilla is about half way.

How long do you think it will take you to complete the series or type set?
12 Caesars: It will take some time, the 3 I need are on the scarce/rare side.
Lucilla & Crispina:Crispina I should be done soon and lucilla will take awhile. Im being picky on condition with some while others the reverses are rare.

Why did you choose that series or type set?
12 Caesars: Acquired some emperors cheaply recently and since then its kickstarted me in wanting to complete it.

Lucilla & Crispina: Mainly cause no one else that I know of has done a set so I wanted to be a bit different. Plus I like them both portrait wise & their history, even though they're not as historical as some other empresses
    .

What obstacles stand in your way to completing the series or type set?
This applies to both, but cost. The 3 emperors I need still are very costly, even for bronzes of them so they will take awhile to save up the $ to acquire.

Same can be said for the ladies. I have gotten a few deals on some but others I did overpay a bit cause I know getting another one would take a long time to get or would be expensive anyways. The ladies are just taking longer due to scarcity and some due to cost or pickiness cause of condition.

What series or type set are you working on?

Draped Bust Half Eagles from 1795-1807

    How far along are you?

    One coin. An 1806.

How long do you think it will take you to complete the series or type set?

My entire lifetime probably or at least 40 years or so.

Why did you choose that series or type set?

I love gold. I love early American history. I love the way it looks.

What obstacles stand in your way to completing the series or type set?

The price of the coins and their rarity.

I struggle with all of the overdates, I recently had the chance to pick up the 1847/7 and 1944/81. The 47/7 was graded VF25 and you could clearly see the smaller 7, I bought it. The 44/81 was graded VG10 and my opinion was the 8 looked little more then a bump, I declined. I can't imagine that I would be happy with the overdate on a coin graded in the G/VG range.

Even though I won't ever finish, I am working on finding all the wheat cents from circulation. I've got probably about a third so far.

  16. Thank you for this tread
I dont set any time frame to anything that gives me the joy that coins have given me.
I never got into the hobby to buy high dollar coins as i cant afford them and i dont see much history in the proof coins that so many have put lots of money into.
I do not find that buying a coin gives me any joy at all because if that was the only way we as collectors had to get them this form would be many members short.
I get coins from change old homes metal detecting or any way that the coin is free and dosent cost me unless its gas and time.Ive never thought id have any complete set nor do i care if i do.
The most fun i have had is watching this form and seeing all the excitement others have shown when they have a story to tell or a special coin to show.
Its more than enough to keep me going and its what gives me my drive to look harder and study longer
Many thanks to all that share with me daily.

I'm currently working on Roosevelt dimes.

Hope to be done by Christmas.

My biggest obstacle is too high of prices relevant to actual value.

I collect registry quality Jefferson Nickels from 1938 to 1964. Wanna see how far along I am, click on the link below.

I chose this series after buying a spectacular toned Appalachian Jefferson from Anaconda Rare Coins in 2008. The obstacle in my way is that the quality of the 1960's Denver mint Jefferson Nickels does not allow for very many coins that meet my standard for inclusion in my collection.
