I've been doing a lot of different collecting for my whole life from baseball cards to now firearms and re-collecting in coins/currency. And no matter which thing i was collecting there was always to have two catagories which are:

"The one that got away" meaning the one you shouldve bought went back and it was gone

    or

"Mom threw it out" where mom (or dad) was cleaning thought it was meaningless and was gone forever

For myself, I had my mom throw out my Leroy Butler Rookie card and my dad didnt buy the M1 Tanker I wanted. For coins my steel pennies have been lost.

So what was your "Mom threw it out" and/or "the one that got away" coin and are still kicking yourself over the years.

(Apologies if this wasn't the right location for posting this topic)

Out all the ones you missed out, what is one that tops the list.

I wouldn't say "it got away" but it's the closest thing I have. I had a 1883 ms64 CC Morgan I bought on a Colorado trip at age 14, this is the same trip I started really collecting. Forward to age 24, about a year ago. The Lord of the Rings extended came out on blu-ray and it was calling me (in a bad way like the ring itself). Now the 1883 at the time was in a generic plastic holder and while a great coin was kind of an odd ball because of this odd holder. So I took it to my local dealer, sold it and bought the lord of the rings...

While i've since replaced that coin with an "official one" by PCGS and it fits nicely in my collection, I still kick myself for selling the original.

Well, let's see, the one that got away, Hmm, there was Sheila, Debbie, Louise, Donna, Lisa, Sue, Barbara.... That about covers Senior Year, now moving to college..........

As for coins, no regrets, there is always the next "must have" right around the corner.

The one that hurts the most wasn't even a coin. It was a brownback note from Emporium, PA which would have completed my set of notes (2) from that town's bank of known notes. It was on Heritage and I thought I'd be home from work in time to bid. Didn't happen and I lost it for a measly $400 and some dollars. It's one of two known surviving pieces from that bank. I'll be lucky if I ever see it come up for sale in my lifetime again. Thats one set I'll probably never finish now.

My mom threw out a turtle that I had named "bird" (I wasn't the brightest kid) because she thought it stank. I still miss that turtle, it was cute when it yawned.

As for coins, some of my buddies spent some silver quarters at the arcade not knowing what the were. I think it totaled about seven rolls.

My mom threw away, or spent, or sold my entire paper collection from when I was a kid.

I got the coins and back into collecting them but never got back into the paper.

I lost my whole collection when I was 10. I had a few rolls of wheat cents and some silver. Not much but alot for a 10 year old. Well me and my brother were moving to my grandmas house and we had stayed there for about a week before we got to start moving stuff in and when we started I noticed it was missing.. still don't know what happened to it.

I would like to add another category, especially when it comes to baseball cards.

Things you should have sold when you should have. Some of them cards are worth less then peanuts now. Remember Mark McGwire, Barry Bonds and Jose Canseco among a few? Man you could have made a ton of money before.

So true on this on the fact of selling when you shouldve, but what modern coins/ bills shouldve you sold back in the day that are worthless today?
