Does anyone here think we should have a $5 coin replace the $5 bill?

Canada has been talking about this issue for many years, from what I hear, and I know some people have said "Skip the $2 coin and go right to a $5 coin" here in the U.S. Now, if we did get rid of $1, $2 and $5 bills, I would definately want a $2 coin as well as the $1 and $5 coins. (Otherwise, you would be carrting around too many $1 coins a lot)

    What is your opinion?

Drago, be a hero and make it happen! Why not go for replacing all notes with coins?
Maybe add $200, $500, $1000 and $10000 coins, too. Go big or don't bother.

I'm in favor of $1, $2, (like pretty much the rest of the civilized world has) and $5 coins, but that will not happen until we get rid of the respective paper bills. Since our insightful leaders have decided to ditch the $1 coin and not the bill, I am in doubt that this will happen any time soon.

I think that is the most rediculous thing I have ever heard. If we do that, I'm leaving this country. I can kind of see maybe the $1 coin replacing the paper $1 dollar (even though I still oppose it), but a $5 coin too? C'mon, seriously?? That would be moving backwards. $5 coins would be too easy to counterfeit and it since it's $5, it's most likely worth it, where a $1 coint is worth reproducing. Don't get me wrong, it is still possible to counterfeit $5's, but it's a lot tougher than reproducing coins. Have you been paying attention to the news lately? Do you see what's going on in South America and Korea? For now, the last thing America needs to be worrying about is stupid things like higher denominations, different denominations of coinss, getting rid of this and that and replacing it with this and that. Instead, let's focus on invading Korea and putting a stop to the might SUPERDOLLAR!! IMO, the superdollar is being treated WAY too lightly and people are instead focusing on other things, like this. Just watch what happens when China and all of the other countries we borrowed trillions from find out that our currency is that easy to counterfeit. We'll be in trouble and the last thing that will matter at that point is weather we have a $5 coin or a $5 paper bill, because they will both be worth nothing...

So to summarize, I'm not worried on that right now. We as a country have other things to be attending to besides playing musical money denominations.

    Wow...

tbudweiser if you move can I have some of your coins? You know, less stuff to pack up. Especially if you have lots of those big clunky dollar coins :)

I don't think a bimetallic $5 would be easy to duplicate, but I'm not a counterfeiter so I have no idea.

In the grand scheme of things I also am not too worried about coins replacing bills or bills replacing coins, but apparently the government is as our elected officials have enough time to sponsor bills to eliminate dollar bills, eilimate dollar coins, change the amount of silver in collector coins (really?!?!) etc. so it must be important. Maybe this is an issue that they can actually handle. The real issues seem too hard.

So to summarize, since this was posted in the "coin chat" forum maybe we could discuss coins?

I didn't even check what category it was posted in. Fine, I'm out. No, you can't have my dollar coins. The only difference about the dollar coins that this thread is discussing and the dollar coins I collect is mine are actually silver and will always hold value in the world and not just junk clad metal like the current day dollar coint that this thread is talking about. See, my dollar coins actually mean something.

Oh and not that it matters, but it's tbudwiser and not tbudweiser. I have no affilitation with the beer company. ;-)

Japan has 500 yen coins. I'm fine with a $5 coin.

Not me. Every coin I receive in change drops into the bottom of my purse, only to be retrieved when it gets to be 'heavy'. Not true with the paper money..it never gets heavy!;). Lucy

Perhaps, the U. S. should eliminate the bills of one and two dollars. In parallel to the aforementioned action, it should introduce a 3$ coin.

You know, you people are probably just going to think I am stupid or crazy for saying this, but, I think that, if we ever do get rid of the $1 and $2 bills for coins, the Treasury should ressurect its orginal plans for printing $3 bills. The only reason would be so that you could carry less coins. (In stead of having to carry a $1 coin and a $2 coin or two $2 coins, you could carry a $3 bill, o5r a $3 bill and a $1 coin for $4, and NO I DO NOT think that they should eliminate the $3 bill for a $3 coin and make $4 bills if they ever make $3 bills. I think that the $3 bill should remain our lowest paper denomination) Plus there would be a space in cash registers for $3 bills.

Oh, and one more thing I did read, was that Canada had $4 bills for a while, that they eventually replaced with $5 bills.

I am only going to say this once. Stop mocking me. Like you, I have a right to my own opinion, and the next time someone mocks me, I am going to get vulgar, whether it bans me from these boards or not. I am NOT hurting anything, by asking questions. Even if you say "Well Drago, you are asking the same questions over and over again" I told you all, I do NOT remember much of what is said in my threads, so I may accidentally bring up the same questions.

I rarely see people use 1 dollar coins, so why would we use a 5 dollar coin...

Well, Switzerland has a 5 fr coin (would be about $5.50), and yes, that does circulate. Then again, they don't have a paper equivalent; the "smallest" bill is the 10 fr note.

Click on the “get involved” link and send a message to your Representative and Senators to replace the rag-dollar with the dollar coin and save us 4 to 10 Billion Dollars.

Any attempt to add a $2 coin is a waste of time until the $1 bill is replaced by the $1 coin, and then it should happen one to three years after the rag-dollar is retired. Then, a $2 coin could be introduced to replace the $2 bill, but they are more likely to dump the $2 bill and the $5 bill and move to a $5 bimetallic coin - several years after the dollar coin is fully dominant. And the once cent coin will most likely be retired by then as well. As always, all existing coins and currency will still be worth face value, but new one cent coins will not be minted since they cost more then they are worth - both to manufacture and to handle in commerce.

And Half Dollars will *NEVER* return to normal circulation because they do not work in vending machines, fare boxes, etc.

Realistically, Americans don't like to use change, and more and more people don't even like to use cash. How many of us know those smug people who brag that they never carry cash anymore? I collect coins and even I don't carry change around - it all goes in a big jar. I don't see any reason our country needs more change. I think non-digital currency's best days are behind it.

If you wish not to be mocked, then cease making yourself such an easy target.
Claiming you "don't remember" as an excuse to making the same post over and ever again is so lame that it strains all credulity.

Simple response to the main question, NO!

Only hobo's carry loose change in their pockets wishing it was more money with less load. I don't even carry cash most days, as I'd say most Americans don't any longer, all purchases are a swipe away from a piece of plastic.
