It is worth 4 Maravedis face value

This coin in my collection is similar to your coin. I'm told my coin is from the second series of copper coinage in Santo Domingo that was issued 1542-1556. Doug described the coinage which was minted in Seville Spain & the coins that were minted in Santo Domingo in this previous CT thread:

I hope this helps because I know little about these coins personally.

Your coin is different from mine. If I was to guess (GUESS) I would say that yours might be one of the coins minted in Spain & shipped to the new world. That is just a silly wild guess on my part. I hope someone else can provide you with a better answer.

Couple of the very first coins used in the new world

Apparently Jody007's coin & my coin were a couple of the very first coins used in the new world. There was a mint in Santo Domingo long before there was a mint in the USA. Doug indicated that the first coin struck in the new world was minted in Mexico and not Santo Domingo. He has got the books & the collecting experience so he probably has the facts straight.

I wonder if Jody007's coin was struck in Spain, Santo Domingo, or Mexico? DCH said Santo Domingo.

I'm thinking Collect89's coin is a later version from Santo Domingo. Mine clearly has the mint mark S left of the columns and P (Santo Domingo MM) to the right and on the obverse it has four lines indicating the denomination and the assayers stamp that looks like a E but is really a F. I believe mine to be from 1541, clearly they are different designs.
