Ok guys long story here. Its a new episode so I can't find any videos online yet.. But I was just watching the TV show on history channel "Pawn Stars". Incase you havn't seen its a reality show about a pawn store in vegas... anyway An older gentleman want to sell an antique car. He asks for 100K, Rick (pawnbroker) counter offers for 85K, the gentleman says "No, 100 thousand", Rick says "I'll give you 90", the gentleman says "Nope 100 thousand", Rick says "95 is the best I can do"... The gentleman thinks for a moment and says "you know what, I like you guys. . . so i'll trade you for gold". Right now i'm thinking that hes going to ask for a little extra since hes trading, but this never happends. And i'm also guessing that he only wants 5K in gold or something like that. ...Anyway Rick says well I can't trade the car for gold but I can give you cash and you can buy gold. They shake hands and the next scene Rick pushes a huge bundle of cash accross the table and the gentleman pushes is back to Rick. The next scene There is about 70 gold coins on the table in piles of 5. A quick shot from the camera shows mostly krugarands. Then Rick mentions that hes giving him some "20 dollar gold pieces" (liberties). The camera shows Rick holding a $20 lib. The man asks for a bag and a security escourt. A final scene shows the man with a huge sack swung over his shoulder LOL. The guy mentioned something along the lines that "Gold is a great investment, and the dollar isn't doing well". He also mentioned he will be burrying the gold lol. Rick also mentioned that Gold is $1550 right now. So this must have been taped within a few months. Boy I didn't expect him to take the full 95K in gold I'll try to find the video but this is a brand new episode that just aired. Just thought I would share this with you guys.. Awsome seeing about 80 1 ounce gold coins!!
Yeah, I watched too...Amazing that sweet car was only worth a little pile of metal...hahaha Both very nice to gawk at. Erin
What kind of car? Never new a pawn guy to increase his bid unless the other guy drops down first. If the car was worth $100K that means Rick was only taking a 5% discount - hard to believe. Unless the car was worth $200K ... kc
I saw a commercial with him looking at a blue Shelby Cobra. Was that the car involved in the gold trade?
The car was worth around 175K. The man asked for 100K. And no it wasn't a Shelby, but i forget what kind of car they said it was.
I saw some of the Krugerrands and American Eagle 1oz. pieces which really are a full ounce of gold each... but there were also some $20 Liberty gold pieces in the pile which were NOT a full ounce of gold each! They way they were mixed in with the full one ounce coins makes me think the seller of the car didn't know the difference and that the shop was able to turn a good deal into a great deal...
I was going to mention this!! LOL I figured there was going to be a difference in cash anyway, so I thought he probobly explained to him that they are slightly under an ounce.. but yea good point.
I saw that episode last night as well. I am sure the pawn shop was happy to give him gold (instead of cash) in exchange as their cost basis for the gold was probably much lower than the $95K. This one seemed even more scripted than usual, but if not I think he would have gotten the $100K in cash he was asking for if he held firm. TC
I was thinking the same thing TC while watching this last night... they probably saved a bundle on the deal. I'm not sure how much a typical pawn shop pays for gold, but it must be considerably under melt. And melt was probably much lower when they bought it.
It probably was. I can't understand how someone would want to show the world that he owns gold and that he's burying the coins. Doesn't seem like a safe thing to do.
Of course... who in their right mind is going to drive their '32 Lincoln Roadster to a pawn shop to sell it? No one, that's who. The TV set isn't even the actual store.
