I am curious as to why the mint does not make any modern coins with Denticles. It's one of my favorite features of the older designs. They make the coin more attractive IMO. I believe they make the coin look more valuable. If anyone happens to know if there's a reason for this let me know.

    Thanks

Time was that people would shave some of the metal (gold, silver) off of a coin and one way of telling if metal was shaved off was by having denticles on the coin. No more gold. No more silver. No more denticles......

Reeding and edge lettering were another method used to deter edge shaving/filing. We still have reeding and edge lettering on coins with very little intrinsic value.

I LOVE denticles and agree with your observation! Perhaps you might consider switching your focus from U.S. to British pieces. You can find lots of great examples with beautiful and distinctive Conder tokens.

Denticles were originally intended to facilitate stacking, but when the mints went to the "closed collar" method of striking coins, they could have been eliminated, but the design was so entrenched in coinage, the design stayed for many years after as aesthetic value.

Now they are a helpful aid in determining counterfeits.

One problem they might have with denticals is that they may cause stress points in the die and lead to more die cracks or chipping between the denticals.

    Good Question

I agree with their added (and now useless) utility and eye appeal and also wondered where they went.

Looking forward to see what else this thread reveals.

I agree! They give the coin a more "distinguished" look. The UK in 2008 redesigned their coinage, and got rid of the beading round the edges, and that is, IMO, for the worse. They replaced toothed borders (denticles) with beads after 1953, and I always thought the tothed borders looked better.

The older UK coins I love because of the toothed or beaded borders. A coin looks a little 'bare' without them, I think.

There is a very simple reason why denticles are no longer used on our coins. It's because every member of Congress is an artist, and the AIP and CCAC are mere paper tigers.

    Just proving

Just proving ALL art is not GOOD art 9Balls.

Coins will not be circulated in 100 years anyway.

People will have implants while still in their plastic womb (complete with their NUMBER enbeddedness, good for all transactions and tracking).

    The rest will be history.:(

Rev13:16He also forced everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead, 17so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of his name.

Rev 14:9A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice: "If anyone worships the beast and his image and receives his mark on the forehead or on the hand, 10he, too, will drink of the wine of God's fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath. He will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb. 11And the smoke of their torment rises for ever and ever. There is no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and his image, or for anyone who receives the mark of his name."

It's coming. No need for currency or coins. Of course, then a coin collection will be the least of our worries.
