I was out buying things for my son's birthdaay party Sunday and I recieved two wheat cents in change - a 1942-D and a 1954-D both in fine condition from two different stores. Its pretty rare that you get a "wheatie" in change - but two in one day from two differnt stores is kinda unusual.
When I worked as a cashier at Sam's Club found tons of silver dimes in the drawer, would always buy them out and take them home. Got a pretty big collection... also found a few wheaties, one time found a Mercury dime, a buffalo nickel, and quite a few foreign coins. Where I work now don't do nearly as much cash volume as Sam's but still find wheaties on ocassion, always save them. Find a lot of foreign coins too, especially Canadian.
It's always fun finding older stuff in change, love finding wheaties. Once found a 1909 cent from circulation. Only G-4 though. Nice finds man. :thumb: Phoenix
I found two wheats last week myself and also made a post on CT. What's neat is when you glance at that handful of change your just about to throw in your pocket, you can always spot that one coin that needs another look and sure enough...or most times its the wheatty. They just look different from a distance.
I have been picking out the pre-82's from my change for better than a year now, I have 5 rolls of them currently. I make sure to pay for almost everything in cash to get change to sort through. They are not as easy to find these days, that's for sure!
Found three Wheaties in change this month. I think many folks are spending out their old jars of change from years gone by.
wont post a pic but its been a while since i got good change. my coworker gave me $5 to buy him and i a coffee today. the tim hortons cashier gave me back a 1957 silver quarter (canadian) and its pretty worn and a shiny 1975 penny. i went to wash my hands and thought, looks like someones spending their collection here. i went back and asked if she had more like it. she said yes and proceeded to hand me a nickle quarter. i said no a silver one like this. she looked puzzled ,pulled out a handfull and said they were all normal. they did look all normal at a quick glance, but i realized she had no idea what i was talking about. wish i could have gone through her till. oh well i got back in the truck and handed my coworker a $5. i told him why i was keeping his change, but to my surprise he seemed to would have prefered the quarter than coffee on me. you mean theres more of us coin nerds out there?
I got a 1945 silver Jefferson Nickel in change the other day. I couldn't believe it! I agree with Doc U Mint, and think that with the bad economy people are spending old jars full of coins that have sat on their shelves for years.
I had a couple come in a week or so ago telling me they were thinking about pulling their older stuff out and spending it. Of course I told them to let me look at them first and they said ok. I haven't seen them back.
i was just thinking along those lines the other day. maybe i should get rolls of quarters and dimes. people who need cash and have hoarded us coins, and figure the us dollar isnt worth it anymore could be spending them. i might find some silvers, since us coins just look different to the average joe. dont think it works on the other side of the border as i think most average joes are just happy to get rid of canadian change as soon as possible, regarding it as "not real money"
