pardon!!!!!!!!!!!!!we have never issued cents the coins are pennies.....................and the best of them all the 1797 cartwheel,
Woah! We Americans get yelled at for calling US cents Pennies! And just when we get to calling Pennies cents??? I sense an argument coming on
Doing cartwheels will calm the waters! And remember! The use of term pennies for us doesn't make cents to them.
coinman0456, A very nice item--I like it. Not a British penny, though. And not a 1783 U.S. cent, either. You posted a photo of, I believe, the Washington & Independence, Draped Bust token (Type with no button on the toga). Although dated 1783, the originals were struck in copper c. 1820 probably by Thomas Ingram of Birmingham, England. Later on W.S Lincoln of London made proof restrikes (using new dies) in copper & silver about 1850, and then again around 1860. I do not have a copy of the Norweb auction catalog to verify, and I am certainly no expert...so I won't make any further attribution. Perhaps another CT member would care to add some insight.
I just took some additional pics of my 1853 piece & am looking for some help identifying the variety:
There are two varieties. One with plain trident and colon close to DEF (not this one) and one with an ornamental trident and colon far from DEF (which is what you have). This is clearly illustrated on my website at http://www.coins-of-the-uk.co.uk/pics/qv/1d/index.html Regards
