As you know 1964 was the last year the US Mint produced 90 per cent silver Business Strike (circulation) coins in denominations of Ten Cents (Dimes), Twenty-five Cents (Quarters), and Fifty Cents (Half Dollars). Know what else happened in 1964? With the issuing of the 1964 Half Dollar featuring President John F. Kennedy, 1964 has the distinction of being the first year every newly struck circulating coin featured a United States President on its obverse. Take a look (photos courtesy of Coin World (www.coinworld.com): 1964 CENT: http://www.coinpage.com/coin-image-2109.html 1964 NICKEL: http://www.coinpage.com/coin-image-6079.html 1964 DIME: http://www.coinpage.com/coin-image-3048.html 1964 QUARTER: http://www.coinpage.com/coin-image-2327.html 1964 HALF DOLLAR: http://www.coinpage.com/coin-image-2169.html Did you know? Something else to ponder: With the Eisenhower Dollar being replaced with the Susan B. Anthony Dollar in 1979, 1978 was the last year all newly produced circulation coinage featured a President on its obverse. Here they are: (Coin Page photos) http://www.coinpage.com/coin-image-2109.html http://www.coinpage.com/coin-image-6085.html (cointrackers.com photo) http://cointrackers.com/coins/742/1978-p-roosevelt-dime/ (cointrackers.com photo) http://cointrackers.com/coins/884/1978-d-washington-quarter/ (Coin Page Photo) http://www.coinpage.com/coin-image-847.html (Coin Page photo) http://www.coinpage.com/coin-image-2451.html Clinker
Clinker, I think the Mint made silver quarters till 1968 (no clue on dimes)and then 40% halves till 1969 1970 was only in the Mint set
They DID make coins silver past 1964, but they were dated 1964 (with extremely rare error exceptions). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coinage_Act_of_1965
So 1964 silver coins stopped in 1966 not 1968, from above. Thanks I've been under impression it was 1968 forever.
