If you're like me, you love Coin Talk. This numismatic community here is vibrant and active. When other sites are 'Sleepy Hollow', this place is busy. Although I don't post here often, I've been a lurker for quite a while, and I've been trying to come up with a contest that would encourage members to check out Coin Talk every day (or at least several times a week). I've finally come up with an idea that meets these goals -- the 'Slot Machine Contest'.
    ---
This is a game of prediction, not a gambling game. Naturally, it's free to enter, and I pay for any and all prizes. The object of the game is to correctly predict what symbols will line-up on the 'pay line' of an antique four-reel slot machine that I own. This quarter machine is old and rickety (just like me), it buzzes loudly and makes other odd sounds, but it works. The lighting for the payoff chart is burnt out, and the light for the play reels flickers on and off, but the reels and payoff mechanism work just fine, so it'll be nice to put this old one-armed-bandit back into service again. Perhaps this will prompt me to give the slot machine a tune up someday. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy our contest.
    ---
To enter the 'Slot Machine Contest', simply post a message in this thread with your prediction for the four symbols that will stop on the pay line when I spin the machine. The machine has these symbols on its reels: CHERRY -- ORANGE -- PLUM -- BELL --BAR -- DOUBLE BAR -- TRIPLE BAR.
    ---
Since the machine has four reels, you should post your prediction like this: CHERRY, ORANGE, BELL, BAR.
    ---
This contest is not easy to win. You must predict all four symbols on all four reels (in the correct order) to win a prize. But the prizes are great, up to 1,500 quarters (that's $375 spending money for coins!) You can also earn extra entries for each spin, by correctly predicting one or more of the correct symbols for each spin. The idea is to get you to check this thread every day, with the hope that you will visit other parts of the forum too, making 'Coin Talk' even more active and interesting. I'll try to spin the machine once a day, but no promises. I do have other obligations, you know. And I'll try to keep the game going for at least a month (or until someone wins a 'Jackpot', whichever comes first), but again no promises. There's always a chance that the machine will break down, or family or employment issues take me offline. If that happens, I'll have to end the contest whether or not anyone has won, but let's hope for the best.
    ---
So how do you win those 1,500 quarters, you ask? Simple. All you have to do is correctly predict the four symbols that will stop on the pay line (in the correct order) when I play the machine. That makes you 'Jackpot Qualified' for the next time I spin the reels and guarantees you a prize. You get only one guess per spin. But you can earn more guesses for the next spin by correctly predicting less than four symbols. So it's possible that you could have up to four guesses. (If you earn extra guesses, you must post them all in the same post. And no one is allowed to edit or change any guesses).
    ---
EXAMPLE... You post this guess: CHERRY BAR BELL PLUM...And this is what I spin: CHERRY BELL BAR BELL. You win one extra guess for the next spin. (So you get to post two guesses next time). But if this is what is spin: BELL BAR BELL PLUM then you lose. You must guess correctly from left-to-right. The first reel was a wrong guess. Better luck next time.
    ---
Once you become 'Jackpot Qualified', you play a different game (on the next spin) than everyone else does. While the other players are still guessing what symbols will come up, you actually win whatever coins the machine pays out! That's right, up to 1,500 quarters (if you choose the Six Coin Option). And even though I've set aside enough money to pay the largest jackpot, the odds of winning 1,500 quarters is very small. You'd have to get four triple-bars (or 4 double or single bars) to win a jackpot. It's very possible to win no money at all on the Jackpot spin (if no winning combination comes up). If you prefer a sure thing, you can choose an option that has smaller jackpots, but guarantees you a better coin (like an MS62 PCGS or NGC Morgan Dollar with the One Coin option). Details are in the official rules, which I will post below, just so that there's no confusion about how to play and win. (If I've messed up and something above is different than in the Official Rules, the Official Rules are what counts).
    ---
I'll post the results of each spin to this thread (using text, the same way that you post your guesses). I will also try to post a photo of the reels after each spin, but no promises (always a chance my camera or the internet is being uncooperative). For spins when someone is 'Jackpot Qualified', I will post the results in a message and I will try to shoot a video (and post a link) of the reels spinning and stopping.
    ---
Here's a photo of the slot machine reels, showing ORANGE TRIPLEBAR DOUBLEBAR PLUM on the pay line:

And here's a photo of the payoff chart (in quarters) for 'Jackpot Qualified' spins. Note that 'Jackpot Qualified' spins also pay right-to-left. Cool!

I'm not sure if this forum allows video embedding, and I've never tried to embed a video before, but if it works, here is a clip of the machine in action. If it doesn't work, oh well, I tried.

Everything below is the 'Official Rules'. You may begin posting your guesses now. The first spin of the 'Slot Machine Contest' will be tomorrow (Cinco De Mayo) between 9pm and 11pm California time. One final note: Please excuse any wierdness in the way this message is posted. I had trouble getting this long message to format into paragraphs. --The Coin Trader

    [size=-3]Official ‘Slot Machine Contest’ Rules:
    ---
    SECTION ONE
    ---
    1. This is a prediction game that is free to play, not a gambling game where people pay for a chance to spin and win. Object of the contest correctly predict which symbols will stop on all of the slot machine ‘pay lines’, making you eligible to win a coin and/or cash in the next spin of the slot machine.
    ---
    2. Each forum member may post one message per spin, containing one prediction for all-four-symbols (in correct order) on the slot machine. Once posted, guesses (and bonus guesses) may NOT be edited or otherwise changed. Ambiguous, edited or incomplete predictions will be considered non-entries, and the forum member will be considered non-Jackpot-Qualified and ineligible to post another prediction until after the next spin on the slot machine. Each guess is valid only for ONE spin (the next posted spin of the slot machine).
    ---
    3. Forum members may earn additional guesses for the next spin of the slot machine by correctly predicting (in the correct order) the first-symbol, or the first-and-second-symbols, or the first-second-and-third-symbols stop on the pay line of the slot machine in the next posted spin. Bonus guesses must be posted by the forum member in the SAME post as his/her regular guess, and must be posted in time for the next draw, or be forfeited.
    ---
    4. Members who correctly predict which symbols stop on all of the first three pay lines (left-to-right in correct order) earn three bonus guesses for the next spin of the slot machine. Members who correctly predict which symbols stop on exactly the first two pay lines (left-to-right in correct order) earn two bonus guesses for the next spin of the slot machine. Members who correctly predict which symbol stops on only the first (left) pay line earn ONE additional guess for the next spin of the slot machine.
    ---
    5. A member who is the first to correctly predict which symbols stop on all four of the pay lines (left-to-right in correct order) will become ‘Jackpot Qualified’ for the next spin of the slot machine. Only one member may become ‘Jackpot Qualified’ for each spin of the slot machine. In case of duplicate identical entries (with four-symbols-correct in proper order) for a single spin, the member who FIRST posted the correct guess will become ‘Jackpot Qualified”, and any other member(s) who posted duplicate identical entries will only earn three additional guesses for the next spin of the slot machine (as detailed in Rule 4), and will NOT be considered ‘Jackpot Qualified’.
    ---
    6. As a member, it is YOUR responsibility to avoid posting identical guesses as another member, and it is YOUR responsibility to keep track of additional guesses that you earn. Remember, if you post a duplicate guess as another member, you are NOT ELIGIBLE to become ‘Jackpot Qualified’. In the event that you post more guesses than you are entitled to, all guesses in that post will be considered NON-ENTRIES, so double check the posted results of each spin against your guess.
    ---
    7. By entering or accepting any coin prize or cash, you agree to be bound by these rules. Rules for spins in which a member has become ‘Jackpot Qualified’ are posted in SECTION TWO.
    ---
    8. To prevent forum members from registering new identities for this contest, the contest is open only to those who were registered on Coin Talk as of yesterday (5-4-2012) or before. Any malfunction of the slot machine voids all pays and plays, just like in a real casino.
    ---
    9. Contest rules may be changed at any time, and contest may be ended at any time. Contest will NOT be ended while any member is ‘Jackpot Qualified’. In the event that the machine breaks down while a member is ‘Jackpot Qualified’ and the machine can not be fixed within 7 days following the previous spin, the ‘Jackpot Qualified’ member shall win $50.00 and shall not be eligible for any more spins or cash or prizes.
    ---
    10. Members who are not ‘Jackpot Qualified’ are not eligible to win any prizes or cash.
    ---
    SECTION TWO
    ---
    11. When a member becomes ‘Jackpot Qualified’, I will try to post a message to the contest thread, asking that member to choose which ‘Jackpot Option’ he/she prefers for the next spin of the slot machine. ‘Jackpot Qualified’ member does not need to wait for my post to post his choice. The next spin will not be held until the ‘Jackpot Qualified’ member posts his choice of ‘Jackpot Option’ or until 24 hours have passed, whichever is longer.
    ---
    12. ‘Jackpot Qualified’ member may choose from the payout options in Rule 14. In the event that the ‘Jackpot Qualified’ member does not post his choice before the next spin, he/she will be paid as if he/she chose option ‘A’ (Single coin option).
    ---
    13. Members winning collectible coin prizes must provide a USPS mailing address to receive the prize. Members winning cash prizes may choose between receiving a check by US Mail, or payment through Paypal with the winner paying any Paypal fees. The actual clad quarters paid out by the machine will not be sent, due to postage costs.
    ---
    14. ‘Jackpot Options’:
    ---
    A. Single Coin Option: Pays one PCGS or NGC CERTIFIED MORGAN DOLLAR (MS62 or better) plus one potential ‘Cash Spin’ on the machine with a single coin played. (Maximum win: 250 clad quarters).
    ---
    B. Two Coin Option: Pays one raw CIRCULATED MORGAN DOLLAR plus one potential ‘Cash Spin’ on the machine with two coins played. (Max. win: 500 clad quarters).
    ---
    C. Three Coin Option: Pays one raw PROOF FRANKLIN HALF DOLLAR plus one potential ‘Cash Spin’ on the machine with 3 coins played. (Max. win 750 clad quarters).
    ---
    D. Four Coin Option: Pays one raw CIRCULATED WALKING LIBERTY HALF DOLLAR plus one potential ‘Cash Spin’ on the machine with 4 coins played (Max: win 1000 clad quarters).
    ---
    E. Five Coin Option: Pays one raw circulated 90% SILVER WASHINGTON QUARTER plus one potential ‘Cash Spin’ on the machine with 5 coins played (Max. win 1250 clad quarters).
    ---
    F. Six Coin Option: Pays one raw circulated 90% SILVER MERCURY DIME plus one potential ‘Cash Spin’ on the machine with 6 coins played (Max. win 1500 clad quarters).
    ---
    15. Any member who wins any ‘Cash Spin’ of 250 clad quarters or more will ‘retire as a slot champion’ and be ineligible to play again.
