3$ in halves from bank teller = 1 64, 2 40%ers
$250 in pennies = roughly 190 wheats including a AU50 ish 1909P

Question

In my last box, two of the 40%ers from the side almost looked like normal clad. The inner layer had an almost copper color to it. I've never seen that before, anyone else?

Stopped at a bank at lunch and they had 72 dollars of halves: 1 roll of bank wrapped, 6 rolls of customer wrapped, and 4 loose.

Bank wrapped was an orignal roll of 1993D all in BU (don't know what to do with it).

In the others I found 7 40%ers and 1 1964 90%er.

:D

Citibank box...

I went to my Reston, VA Citibank branch and asked for $500 worth. It took them almost 2 weeks to get them in. When I went in to pick them up, the teller told me that her manager said that these were for face, but any future rolls would cost me an additional $1 per roll.

$11 for $10 worth of halves!

I told her that they really were trying to drive business away. Is it possible that with all the TARP funds, they don't need John and Jane Q Public as customers any longer?

I also went to my local Credit Union. They gladly gave me the $340 that they had.

Now I have a boatload of halves to go through.

In the ones so far, I've found a handful of the bicentennial halves. I hear that some are 40% and others are not. How can I tell?

Look at the edge, listen for the sound, or check the date. The edge will be missing the copper center, flip it in the air and you will hear a distinct ring with silver, or check these dates:

1964 and older are all 90% silver
1965 - 1970 are 40% silver
1971 and forward are clad, no silver except that some "s" mint halves are silver, but rare to find. I found one bicentennial half that was silver, that has been my only one. Compare it to other 40%ers and you can tell. I always do a sound check. Flip both a normal clad one in the air and a 40%er, then flip the 76 and see which one is sounds like (there is a big difference). That is what I do if I am ever unsure. I think I answered more than what you asked, but oh well.

That is crazy they want to charge you for halves.....find another bank!

Nickels of the day

I am working a Christmas gift for nephew, I and trying to fill in the complete Harris books with nickels. So far I have gone through $200.00 of nickels and have been able to find everyone from 1959 -2008 with every mint.
Other then at I found
1939, 1940, 1940-D, 1940S, 1941, 1941-s, 1942, 1943-p, 1943-s, 1944-p, 1946, 1948, 1948-d, 1951-d, 1952, 1954, 1954-s, 1957, 1957-d and 1958-d
Not bad if I say so myself. I would also have to say that there was a1964 nickel in each roll. At least that is what I think I saw.

I pick up $20 in quarters every semester for laundry purposes, but now that I have started collecting, I figured that I might as well search them first.

I only found one coin of note, a 1940 quarter with rather lovely golden-brown toning, and slight bluish toning around the edges of the field on the reverse.

Is it unusual to find toned coins rolled up? This is the first time I've really inspected my rolled quarters. I've looked through rolls of pennies before, but never found anything worth noting, so when I found this quarter, I was rather taken aback.

Hey, it looks like your found yourself a great " dump " bank. I would start dumpping all searched coins on Citibank, and compliment them for their service with a smile on your face. Thats crazy to try to charge 10% for rolled coin... bet they can't charge when you deposit coins.

Good luck with the search. You will find some of the key dates very hard to find in time for Christmas. And yes, 1964 nickels were minted in HUGE quantities, 2.7 billion, almost 500 million more than the next most-common year.

Are you the same Colibri from the SDMB?

Thanks Bob!

Yes, I plan on using the Citibank branch to deposit any change I get.
As for coin wrappers, Citibank gave me a bunch of quarter wrappers and below, but shrugged when I asked for half wrappers.

My NFCU branch said they'd order some for me but I haven't gone back so I don't know if they'll actually be able fo get them.

I see them online for $4 per 1000 (flat) and $14 per thousand (shotgun). That seems mighty cheap. I may order them.
