Lots of talk of Roman Empresses lately (Mat ) coins which I too have a fondness for. So I though I would make a thread where we can all post our nicest or favorite or ANY Roman Empress coins, from any period during Roman Imperial times. I will start out with some Bronzes of Julia Mamaea, and some Silver Antoninianii of Marcia Otacilia Severa, Herennia Etruscilla as well as some Antoninianii of Salonina..... some will have to be in my second post due to the 5 pic upload limit per post..... enjoy, and don't be shy about posting your own, any and all Roman Empress pics are welcome ******************************* -------- first and second pics: Julia Mamaea - Venus Victrix Sestertius: Julia Mamaea AE Sestertius. 228-9 AD. M P in exergue below. ------- ------- Third, fourth and fifth pics: Ancient Roman Empire Empress Julia Cornelia Salonina, Wife of Roman Emperor Gallienus (253 - 268 A.D.) Silver Antoninianus - obv: SALONINA AUG - Diademed and draped bust right, seated on a crescent. rev: JUNO REGINA - Juno standing facing left holding a patera and sceptre. Peacock to left, star in left field. ------ **************************************** I just love the JUNO REGINA Salonina Ant.... such a beautiful portrait, the detail on her braid is amazing, and you can even see some of the detail of the design on her tiara on top of her head... and although Juno has a bit of a flat face, the reverse is wonderful with a great peacock and good detail all around, one of my favorite Empress coins. I also really like the style of my particular Herennia Etruscilla Ant, most the ones I see of her have the 'cornrows' style hair like Salonina and Otacilia Severa do in my other pics, but on my Herennia example, her hair is straight, I like that. --------------------------------------------------- That is all for now.... now it is your turn Cointalk.... show us what you have in the way of Roman Empresses....
Messalina wife of Claudius I Poppaea wife of Nero Both are provincial billon tetradrachms of Alexandria
One of my Long Beach pickups. Aelia Flaccilla ( 379 - 386 A.D.) Bronze AE 4 O: AEL FLACCILLA AVG, diademed and draped bust right. R: SALVS REIPVBLICAE, Victory seated right inscribing Christogram on shield set on cippus. 12mm
Nice coins everyone, I especially like that Claudius Tetra from Alexandria from dougsmit, I have been after that type for a while, great example. Collector1966 - Nice Mamaea Denarius, great reverse. I also like everyone's late bronzes, seems the reverse with Victory inscribing a 'chi-rho' on a shield is popular amongst you guys I like it, very cool. And yeah Randy, if it's a lady it counts I guess I should have labelled the thread 'post your Roman Women' rather than 'post your Roman Empresses'.
Question: Who would be your choice if someone were to offer to give you a female coin? Candidates: Titiana Dyrantilla Zenobia Constantia others?
Ancient Doug: I would love a Zenobia, given the historical significance of the Palmyrene splinter empire during the instability of the third century (picture and attribution from dirtyoldcoins): RIC 2 Antoninianus Obv: SZENOBIAAVG - Diademed, draped bust right on a crescent Rev: IVNOREGINA - Juno standing facing, head left, holding patera in right hand, scepter in left, peacock at her feet; star in left field. $7,200 1/16/02. Here's a coin I do know intimately: Plautilla AR Denarius. PLAVTILLAE AVGVSTAE, draped bust right / PROPAGO IMPERI, Plautilla and Caracalla clasping hands. RSC 21. (Attribution wildwinds.com) The question for her is "So, how did that work out for you?" http://lordbest.napoleonicmedals.org/galleryplautilla.html guy
