Got this beautiful Mercury today in the mail. The pics don't show the nice toning. Anyways, I thought she had a scratch down her face. Upon closer inspection, it looks like a die crack. Opinions?[IMG][IMG]

A die crack in that general position on ANY coin would be unusual.
And it's a bit too linear.

I think it's more likely a die scratch.

    An interesting piece.

I think a die crack. A lttle to jagged and I would not expect a die scratch to follow part of the hair in the first picture. At least in my opinion.

It's not actually Mercury on the dime. It's Lady Liberty with a winged hat, which symbolized free thought or something like that. It just looks like Mercury, hence the name Mercury dime. Many people still call it a Winged Liberty dime.

Yes, I'm there with you with the interchangeability of Mercury/Winged Liberty, however, it never occurred to me that it was Lady Liberty. The obverse has always looked rather masculine to me.

I agree. Not very feminine look, but I guess it is what it is...

Actually that area is not as uncommon as you would think for die cracks. There tons of wheat cents with multiple die cracks on the head and many Roosies have multiple cracks and chips on the head.

the 1942/1 D mercury actually has a die crack on some of the coins that you can see running through almost the same position.
