Threw in my bid a few hours early and won it somehow As far as the Byzantines I usually go for, this one is off that beaten path. Its a 12 nummi featuring Emperor Heraclius and his son Heraclius Constantine, struck in Alexandria, Byzantine Egypt. Paid like $13 for it. Heraclius was the emperor that restored the True Cross to Jerusalem in a magnificent ceremony after recovering it from the Sassanid Persians. He lead his empire to victory in the last, longest, and the most devastating, of the Roman-Persian wars, but all of his achievements in that conflict were undone by the Muslim invasion only a few years later. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heraclius http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constantine_III_(Byzantine_emperor) Heraclius and Heraclius Constantine, Byzantine (Eastern Roman) Empire 12 Nummi Obv: dd MM h hERAC, Heraclius bearded, on left, and Heraclius Constantine with no beard, on right, busts facing, each wearing crown with cross, and chlamys Rev: Large cross potent on two steps, I to left, B to right, ALEZ in ex Alexandria mint, 610-641 AD SB 853 (seller's photos)
oh, that's a very cool coin VK....totally not your usual byzatnine for many reasons...fantastic for the price. man, you're going to mess up my remission from byzatine fever...
Steve hasnt been around in awhile. Lovely coin. Like the obverse especially. I think the price was right too. Dont know much about them though.
Steve is on vacation. For me, my tablet powered off, closing my tabs... While I was about to respond this thread Great Byzantine Coin!
Nice coin. I just got back from my trip earlier this week and am still trying to reset my inner clock.
It's all in the eye of the beholder. That coin is a direct link to a storied emperor and a very tumultuous time in Byzantine history. I appreciated reading the links to the wiki articles - the one on Heraclius seems particularly well-done. You and I should start the Ugly Coins Club - between your Ostrogoths and my Nabataeans, we could deter quite a few people from numismatics, and then all the coins would be ours!
Excellent! All we need is a guy that collects Judaean and we'll be the Four Horsemen of the Numismalypse.
Ok, you're in kid, but let's see some ugly! Your coins are too nice. I've got a real doozy to post later today - a fouree denarius mule. This coin fell off the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down. Keep your eyes peeled and a barf bag handy.
Plus I have a few without any pictures (although most are in higher grades as I like detail and surfaces (surfaces being the most important)
