Thanks for the Welcome. This seemed like a current
issue at the time. LOL. The Art of creating great values
for something worth only a penny to begin with
is amazing to me. I am not trying to defend intentional dishonesty. I'm not a lawyer or an
expert. I do have experience in making good and
bad deals. I also am old enough to know I don't
know everything for sure. Everything is subject to
change. I hope to only make suggestions subject
to aiding folks formulating their own opinion.

Very Accurate comment. It has been going on
since the beginning of sales of coins. I just have
to believe your concern is the concern of others.
For every bad deal , I still have to believe there
are many more good deals. This is coming from a
person who has bought many more times than has sold coins. There has been a lot of positive
things happen in coin sales, I'm sure you will experience them as well.

Of course, with more education comes fewer bad deals.

The most successful people in the World; Tend to
make the most decisions. Most of them Bad. The
unsuccessful Tend to not make many decisions.
Education is sometimes Trial and Error. Talk to the
guys that have flown the plane the most times is
only a suggestion, that may apply to coins as well. Lonegun sounds like a good one to start with.

I may not return , I just wanted you to know how
much I liked your comment . It just sums things up
"If you buy coins , try not to lose your Sense of
Humor." Thanks for the Laugh, no offense meant to
    anyone.

I don't even understand what is going on in this thread, but maybe it's just me...

I have a counterfeit 1909-S VDB laying around here somewhere. It isn't even an added mintmark, just a poorly-created fake most likely struck by sand-cast dies. It looks very similar to the one in the first post. I think they are handy to have and compare against the real thing. The key difference in the one I have "besides color" is the mintmark position. I couldn't match it up with one of the actual dies used.

It's a bit off-topic...but...I feel bad for that fake 09-S VDB in the first picture with the added mintmark...it was a DDO!! :(

    great article and post.

  12. I found this article interesting not only from a collectors point of view, but also from an everyday currency one. In the UK we have circulating £1 coins, but the problem is that there is a huge abundance of fake ones in circulation. Although quality of most is quite poor, some need a much closer look at and can be passed on with out being noticed. The problems arise when they are inserted into vending machines or parking meters, this is because they slip through, and it is only on closer examination that they can be detected.
It is really annoying when you unknowingly receive one because you can't re-spend them. You either have to throw them away or hand them over to the police.
The way round the problem is to examine the £1 coins when you receive them in your change, and then point it out to the vendors.

Did the mintmark location pictures come from a certain book?

I found it on line (here, I believe), but I am sure it originated from a book. I have not a clue what one, though.

Yeah. But finding a S VDB is very rare. Most likely not real.unless you find in ground or in old estate no one has ever checked out.
