The government wanted to eliminate the silver completely from all the coins. The agreement to make the half 40% silver was basically done to buy off the Senators and Representatives from the silver producing states to get them to vote for the Coinage Act of 1965 that gave us the coppernickel clad.

no problem, you gave the best answer to my original question....then had a brain fart !

It morphed into filling up , say a 5 gallon bucket with any us coin, and you get the face value of said coins.

I think I'm going with gold dollars ( real gold dollars).

The correct answer must be a gold coin. ( if we allow historic coins), why not the smallest one, then ?

With current coins the mini-dollar should win.

If I'm wrong show me why !

I'll believe that, the precedent certainly exists, aka "the Morgan $"

    side thought....

are there enough $1 gold dollars in existence to fill a 5 gallon bucket ?

What would the bucket weigh, I know it would be so many thousands of pounds that no human could lift it.....
