I realize I'm a few days early, but I've got a handful of coins on order and I figure I'd put them all in one thread rather than spam the forum. The only coin I want to post at the moment is this Theodosius. I won a small lot this afternoon, but this was the only coin I was shooting for. Any of you that collect late 4th-century know how difficult it is to find well-struck coins of Theodosius, Arcadius, Honorius et al. I saw this little coin in a mixed lot and it appears to have the sharpest rendition of Concordia that I've seen on the small bronzes of Theo, not to mention full legends and a bold mint mark. It's a bit of a bad picture gamble - I've extracted the coin from the pic of the full lot. Let's hope my gamble pays out when I get the coin in hand.
yep, thats nice JA. theres a guy who sells 10 coins for $18 from canada who had some desert patina LRB's recently, name escapes me, but i'll try and search his ID out, worth a look.
Nice Theodosius JA! I really like the detail on that reverse, fantastic rendition of Concordia looking rather regal, it is really something to behold. You're stacking a small hoard of Roman Imperials lately...well done.
Very nice. I think the mintmark is Nicomedia, right? Here is the same Concordia reverse from Constantinople: THEODOSIUS I AE3 OBVERSE: D N THEODOSIVS P F AVG, pearl diademed, draped & cuirassed bust right REVERSE: CONCOR-DIA AVGGG, Constantinopolis seated left, holding globe & sceptre, CONSB in ex. Struck at Constantinople 379-83 AD 2.5g, 18mm RIC 57d I like your portrait better than mine. Good luck when it arrives.
Are you referring to the AE4 size or in general? Cause their larger sizes,AE2, of those emperors, can be found in decent shape & decent price. Theodosius I (379 - 395 A.D.) Bronze AE2 O: D N THEODOSIVS P F AVG, rosette-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right. R: GLORIA ROMANORVM, Theodosius standing left, head right, standard in right, globe in left, ANTA in ex. Antioch 4.67g 20.6mm RIC IX 68b
AE4 - this lot didn't have dimensions listed for any of the coins, but the Theo was next to some folles, and I'm guessing it's somewhere around 14-15mm. At any rate, the price was decent - averaging the coins over the whole lot puts them at $12 apiece. With "Roman" in the title, I'm thinking the world collectors can figure it out.
the good news that you can find Constantine coins in farms here in Libya but its to many of it so its common ( but i love there style )
Theodosius I AE4. 379-383 AD, Siscia, 1.7g, 14.82mm OBV: D N THEODO-SIVS P F AVG, Pearl diademed, draped & cuirassed bust right. REV: VOT V MVLT X within wreath, ASISC in ex. REF: RIC IX Siscia 29D
Theodosius I AE3. 2.2g, 15.13mm OBV: D N THEODOSIVS P F AVG, Pearl diademed bust right. REV: GLORIA ROMANORVM, emperor on horseback, hand raised, ANT gamma in ex. REF: RIC IX Antioch 69A.
Whew! Crisis averted. I thought he'd opened a wormhole. Here's a Theo I from the Stack's mixed lot. There may be others... haven't reviewed the remaining couple of dozen LRBs. Theodosius I, 379-395 AD Constantinople, struck 392-395 AD 21 mm, 3.9 gm Obv: DN THEODOSIVS PF AVG; pearl diadem, draped and cuirassed bust right Rev: GLORIA ROMANORVM; Theodosius standing facing, head right, holding labarum in right hand and globe in left. CONSTA in exergue Ref: RIC IX 88a
Let's hope April really is summer-bound. I'm done with March. In fact, I'm done with this whole winter.
I'm totally done with winter period. After being really sick with pneumonia, I'm ready for good weather. It can still snow in April.
