    Grading and Describing Ancient Coins

"The Grading page was once the most popular part of my site. It was later moved to my ACM site but is restored here for this disk. In an attempt to make it even better I kept adding photos until the total load time was over 4 minutes with a 28.8 modem. I fear too many people would give up before the page loaded. This is not a problem with the CD version but the separation is maintained. Please select from the three separate sections below. HINT: The best parts of this page are the Conditions of Manufacture and Conditions of Preservation sections so PLEASE don't just visit the Standard Grading section and think you have seen what this page has to offer."

British Museum Catalog of Greek Coins

"The British Museum published most of its massive collection of Greek coins in 29 volumes from 1873-1929. The series, called BMC Greek, is the largest collection of ancient Greek coins ever published."

    Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum

"The Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum is a British Academy Research Project, the purpose of which is to publish illustrated catalogues of Greek coins in public and private collections in the British Isles. SNG has retained the traditional, very broad, definition of 'Greek' to include the coins produced by all ancient civilisations of the Mediterranean and neighbouring regions except Rome, though it does include the Roman Provincial series often known as 'Greek Imperials'."

    WILDWINDS

"The WildWinds website has been created as a reference, attribution and valuation resource in the field of ancient numismatics. The data presented here were, for the most part, gleaned from closed online auctions, so you can see for each coin the original auction description, the auction's closing date and time, and the closing price."

    Ancient Coin Values

"Ancient Coin Values is changing to an ancient coin prices and information site. The Eastern Greek Coin Price Guides include values for Sasanian, Parthian, Baktrian, Kushan, and Hunnic Coins. The initial process is somewhat time consuming. However, once the processes are automated we will be adding additional guides in the Greek, Roman, and Byzantine series."

    Celtic Potins of Gaul

    "What are potins?
Most collectors of ancient coins have their particular areas of interest: Roman denarii or sestertii, Greek silver or bronzes, perhaps Biblical coins. Many if not most collectors of ancient coins outside of Europe have never heard of a potin. So what are they, who issued and used them and where and when were they minted?"

Astronomical Symbols on Ancient and Medieval Coins

    "Symbolic Messengers of Medieval Man

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"This 240 page book presents a revolutionary and controversial look at the widespread use of astronomical symbology on medieval European coinage, with an emphasis on the period between the years 1000 and 1350. The book also provides a transistion of the usage of the symbols from the earliest Greek coinage through the Roman and early middle ages.

Common coinage of the period serves as metallic rosetta stones for the understanding of the mindset of medieval man. Celestial events were used by counts and kings alike as propagandistic tools to claim their right to authority. These coins clearly demonstrate that astrological beliefs during the second half of the middle ages were certainly much more prevalent than the church described in its written record.

Celestial symbols on coins give a new understanding to unanswered questions in history. A new insight is found for the heavenly visions of the cross by Constantine on the eve of the Battle of Milvan Bridge, and by Alfonso Henriques of Portugal prior to his great victory over the Moors. Coinage design shows why Philip II of France was known as "Philip the God Given." And a small star on coinage of Louis IX of France tells why he landed at the Bay of Tunis for his last crusade.

The book is of interest to coin collectors, historians, astronomers, and students of religion and astrology."

    Coins of The Sasanian Empire

"Ardashir I, a king of Persis, defeats the Parthian king Artabanos IV and two years later is crowned as the first Sasanian king in 226 AD. His son, Shapur I, expands the borders to include all of modern Iran and parts of Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and the Gulf Coast of the Arabian peninsula. 400 years of war with Rome, Kushans, Chionites and Hephthalites takes its toll and in the mid 7th century the Arabs overrun the Sasanians, replacing Zoroastrianism with Islam."
