American Silver Eagle Collector Coins (Mintage vs Market Value)

I've completed a value exercise on collector ASE's. As some of the mintage data was conflicting, I used the information that I thought made the most sense. Some collector ASE's were sold in more than one package and I added them up as best that I could. I used a common grade to gage market value (ebay completed sales) but it will obviously vary wildly on the rare ASE's like the 1995-W. Here is the result of my research.

After much searching, I've decided to use this website for mintages. It seems the most thorough to me. I've edited my original post to include these mintages.

Issue prices provided to me by Ken who got them from the Mercanti book American Silver Eagles - A Guide to the US Bullion Program.

thanks for the work. some of the prices have varied over the years. I had 3 of the '93-94-95 proofs and they sold for over $100 a few years ago even as silver was way cheaper. then the '97-98 proof were $75-90 for a while. I think the big TV marketers drive the prices up with promotions that distort markets for a while. then the '06W unc went for $125 or more 6-8 months after they came out even with the high mintage, sold 3 of those still have 2. I didn't load up on the '11s cause I wasn't paying attention then, bummer. I saw the '13w unc was kinda a lower mintage so I grabbed a few of those right before they went off sale. hope to make a gain of some sort in a year or so. seems like a lot of modern issues get driven up and down just like the stock market. mostly I can pick winners and timing but I bought some dogs too. it's a fun game along with collecting for long term.

Yes, the mintage of 2013-W UNC is low now but it is selling, albeit slowly, in the dollar set.

That was quite a task you took on Phil. I printed your list for future reference. I can never find things when I need them, so it's now with my inventory sheets. I always keep a hard copy in my safe. Thanks.

I don't suppose you could update this with the original price data by year? :)

I've only been purchasing these directly from the mint since 2006. It is a difficult challenge for to get the original issue price on the earlier years. They tend to vary with the price of silver through the year. The issue prices aren't listed in my versions of the red book or Krause. Although I didn't complete an exhaustive search, I did check the internet but couldn't find anything on issue prices of these babies.

Then there is the issue of the introductory price. Usually about a five dollar difference if bought within the first thirty days. That only applies to the more recent releases, and I'm not sure of the exact date the mint started doing that.

  9. Thanks for doing this. I really like the 2 ASEs from the 2011 set that are under 100K mintage.

    Thanks much.

With the exception of a very few (like $4000 one) I have all these. Neat. Printing the list out for my file.

I remember that long stable era of initial issuing prices and having purchased one ASE each year directly from the US Mint since the original issue in 1986.

When silver fell to $5-$7 an ounce, people screamed they were being ripped off by the US Mint for the proof ASE. (All that money for a fancy coin in a velvet case?) The 1995-W ASE issued with the four gold eagles was considered a "gift" for spending $999.

Back in 1989, 1988-dated proof ASEs were considered rare and prices shot way up due to the low mintage relative to the first two years 1986 and 1987. After all these years, the 1988 proof ASE has no enhanced market value relative to the coins issued prior.

My, how times have changed. Or, have they?

Yep, the 2011 set sure looks undervalued. Looks like those that bought multiples are still flipping them, which keeps prices down, so, I'm holding mine for better days. Many these days are only looking for a quick profit, so if we see prices rise, we see dumping, then falling prices. Many forget that coins are like fine wine, they take time to mature.
