Ok, so I literally just started coin collecting and I'm absolutely loving it. I sat down this afternoon and started with pennies. I have 1 of every year from 1960-2012 with a D Mint mark, and about half of the same with no Mint mark. I noticed on the pennies that 1 of the 1970's I found had a mint mark that was sat higher and looked smaller. it just stood out to me how it looked awkwardly high. I do not know all the little details about these and was just hoping someone might be able to explain why this mint mark is different. I thank you all in advance for your help.
up until a few decades ago the seperate mints had to have the mint mark stamped in by hand because the master die was used to create all of the seperate mints circulation dies. think about how many seperate die pairs each mint goes through each year. cody
