In my opinion it is somewhat strange to celebrate the beginning of a war, especially with such a "propaganda" design. But it may be popular in the UK. Guess they will do a series of several pieces, maybe one for each year. The Monnaie de Paris (FR) does that, but with different themes: "Françaises et français dans la 1e guerre mondiale" (five years). Those will be surcharged collector coins though. The Belgian Mint plans a €2 commem this year; not sure whether that will be a series ... Christian
True, but that British piece can also be had in a regular (Cu-Ni and nickel-brass) version. Christian
Its not a series they issue around two different designs each year. I got mine in 2013 I order them in proof from the mint as soon as they come out. THE LAMPS ARE GOING OUT ALL OVER EUROPE The 100th Anniversary of the First World War– Outbreak Scroll down and you can see each one ever issued and the details of them. http://www.royalmint.com/discover/uk-coins/coin-design-and-specifications/two-pound-coin
Hmm, that Kitchener design £2 coin is "the first coin in a five-year series that will take us on a journey from outbreak to armistice." (see here) Guess it is safe to say that this will be a series, but that does not mean they will be the only £2 pieces in the next five years. Christian
Here is another one, from Australia this time. http://www.perthmint.com.au/catalog...ent-2014-1oz-silver-proof-rectangle-coin.aspx Christian
Well there you go then LOL More expense if I am to have them all. Its also 100 years since my Grandfather aged 18 went off to the trenches. He was shrapnel wounded 6 weeks later in Ypres and brought home. One of the lucky ones.
daveydempsey => the "like" was for the photo and the good news war-tale, "not" for your Grandfather getting hit with shrapnel
Thanks, I understand. He lived a long life afterwards he passed in 1990 aged 94 in the pub of all places.
Let me just say that here in Germany no such coin will be issued. The end of WW1 may be worth an issue but not the beginning. Christian
