Coin Collecting Software

Hello everyone! My 10 yr. old son has been collecting coins for a while now and has probably a couple hundred of them. Since he is so serious about it at his age and hopes one day (we'll see) to perhaps be a big time collector / coin shop owner, I wanted to get him off on the right foot.

We are looking for a coin colecting software to o the following:

1. Track all of his coins with current worth values - values automatic
2. Be able to keep up with what he paid for the coin and do reports that indicate cost vs. worth
3. Be able to add a "user defined" number to each coin record as he has a number that he uses to keep track of each on he has now and doesn't want to change it since all his coins are bar coded with this unique number and he has a PDA for use with it.
4. Be able to attach a couple of his own pics to each record.
5. Be able to track coins individually even though they may be the same, year, grade, and etc... instead of using a quantity on each coint type.
6. be able to track paper money as well with the same characteristics as stated above.
7. Assit with the grading of each coin.

What he (we) want(s) is to be able to track a coin by his number he has already assigned to it, the program get the current value of the coin, attach the pics that he has taken of the coin or paper money, and then be able to print out reports that shows him how much he spent and how much it's worth. On top of all this, he want to track when he sells a coin to upgrade it to another coin so he can see if he lost money or gained money on it.

I know the point is collecting but he very money mided for his age and is already trying to build himself a small business while doing his hobby, and I support him in that.

SO...is there a program out there that will do this. Anyone got any other suggestions as to some programs we should look at.

thanks for all the help.

My Mood:
Try this freeware program highlighted in the August issue of ANA's Numismatist - "Virtual Coin Cabinet II". (www.dataxm.com)
It's very basic and easy to use. I entered all my coins and customed the catalog layout and it works great for me (194 coins). It also allows you to enter photos, sort, print various lists catologs, etc.
The article states that the September issue will futher discuss other features of the program...as I said it is very basic so I'm interested in reading what else you can do with it.

you should contact mmarotta. he is a member here who has demo'd and written about a number of different pieces of coin inventory software. He may be able to fit your needs to a specific program. As for the advice already given, generally you get waht you pay for and that goes for the freeware coin inventory programs too.

Howdy dallee - Welcome to the Forum !!

There are several programs out there that will do most of what you want - but none of them will do it all. The hangup is going to be with values. The problem is this - while a few of the programs do issue value updates twice a year - the values they list are not accurate - most are not even close.

The program I would recommend is called Coin Elite - it will do everything you want, except the values. But it does also offer the ability to enter your own values manually.

Read this thread - Click Here for information on the various programs available.
