The type 1 is a filled s mint mark and the type 2 is a clear s mint mark.

Ummm not quite. The Dies used as masters in 1979 and 1981 are the two important ones. The story goes as follows:

In 1979 while punching the "s" mark on the dies the punch broke. The mint then machined a new mint mark punch. This created the Type I and Type II sets in 1979. The Type I "s" looks like a blob of metal the Type II shows a clear "s" which has a general appearance similar to the s as shown by this font.

In 1981 the remanufactured punch from 1979 broke again. Apparently they did not temper the punch correctly and made it to brittle. Once again they had to machine a new punch thus creating a Type I and Type II set in 1981. THe Type I mark looks just like the Type II in 1979 but the new "s" in 1981 is more rounded. By rounded I mean the mark looks more like an eight instead of two oposing u's laying on there side.

I'm sorry but I am not sure if the Type I or Type II is the most valuable. I do know that having an example of each of these is one of my current collecting priorities.

Hope this helps
