21.6mm diameter coin, 21.2mm or 22mm airtite direct fit?

    i have a 1911 $5 indian head gold, it's diameter is listed as 21.6.

airtite recommends 21.2mm so i bought it, but they have a 22mm but i didn't buy it.

the coin had to be pushed in and fit VERY snug, its about EF with little wear, i had to bend the holder a bit to pop the coin back out. under magnification i noticed grooves on the inside rim of the plastic holder from the reeded edge of the coin.

the edge of the coin seemed ok.

i'm hoping the plastic is softer than the coin.

should i go with the 22mm or will the slop wear the faces?

do you think the reeded edge of the coin got pressed in? it is 22kt

i'm hoping someone has had a similar experience.

I've got hundreds of things like that in my closet. I'll look and see.

I'd say any time you have to use any sort of force to fit a coin like that, you might be asking for trouble.

Might want to consider using AirTites with the foam ring insert: those will give you some extra room to play with so that the coins don't rattle, yet they require no significant force to mount.

Does the foam in those deteriorate to powder like the foam they used in the old plastic cases for tie tacs, awards, cuff links, and such?

I've got about everything but that. I'm almost positive I bought my Airtites from Brent-Krueger for my $5 Indians. They are at the bank and I haven't seen them in a long time.
I did find a couple of Airtites that have the black foam ring that keeps them tight around the coin, but I don't recommend using them. Over time they can stick to your coin and mess it up. Sorry.

Did you order the AT-T22 Airtites?

If you want one with the black foam, PM me with your address and I'll mail it to you.

thanks all.... i already have an airtite with the black foam ring but i'd rather have the smaller diameter direct fit.... and i got the 21mm, not the 22mm.... maybe i'll just order a 22mm and see how it fits... but i already did a mass order of some airtites, i hate to go back and order a 50 cent item and pay $3+ for S&H...
