Thread: Question about a gold coin in a NGC holder

I have a gold buffalo (ms 70) in the older NGC holder that is not flush with the edges. Should I consider sending it back to NGC to get reholdered and if I do, will it be regraded and possibly downgraded?? Thanks.

As I understand it reholdering is not regrading, like when you have things moved to a multi-holder or want to replace a scratched holder. That said, make sure to check as soon as the grades are posted. I once sent in a clerical error for relabeling and it was regraded instead! They changed the grades back when I called their attention to it and I'm glad I caught it before they sent it back to me.

PS, the mistake they made did tell me which coins were strong 66s and which would have been 65s on another day!

I also have a 2006 ms 70 Buffalo in a NGC holder that is not flush in the holder. It is a first strike which I do not really care about it but since I have one, it would be nice to keep since NGC only done these for a year. I am not sure if one could keep this first strike designation if they where resubmitted. Might want to check on this if that is your case. I really do not know how well that little paper insert is anchored in the slab.

As someone who has brooken coins out of slabs, I know that the NGC label is not attached per se, the left and right sides of the white plastic have a beveled edge so the insert, being longer than the opening, wont come out.
It sounds very wise to check before reslabing an NGC "First Strike." Just in case, I would email the question so there's a paper trail if there's a problem down the road. Then send it in to the attention of the person who aproved it in writing if they say yes!

But the big question was, will they put another "First Strike" label on it after loosing the lawsuit to be able to use that phrase. I am guessing that they would relabel it as "early release" but I could be wrong. My advice is also based on my experience with large companies; sometimes if you call three times, you'll get three different answers.

Coins in NGC slabs are often cockeyed. Sometimes you can tap the slab and get the coin to reseat. Be careful not to do it too hard and crack the slab, though (been there, done that).

If you send it back to NGC, get the "reholder" service -- they will not regrade the coin.

That's an important point.

One thing which might help - submit for reholdering at a coin show. All the big TPGs are at the major shows. Submitting there saves postage and time.
