I collect both but heavier on the coins. Didn't get into paper at all until I worked jobs where I hanlded a lot of it. Decided if I was looking for coins in change why not start learning about paper and pulling THAT out of circulation.
It was a good move. There's still a lot out there if you know what to look for.

I enjoy the "hunt" in paper. Finding truly scarce notes that are still circulating. The variables are way different than coins as well.

At one point I basically ignored coins for a few years but I started to miss my old buddies and wandered back into the metal end of collecting. Now it's more coins but I still do paper.

Working at a shop I've begun to dabble a bit more in World stuff. Both coins and paper.

Both can really be rewarding to me.

Oh "Horse Poop"! That is a lame answer at best...

BNB...if you even held a rare piece of paper you would start shaking with excitement when you found out there are only 40 or 50 of them known!

Collecting is a personal preference and rarity is subject to specimens available to the market and known extant varieties.
This holds true with coin and paper....if I were to hand you the 40 plus Large size notes in my collection...you would start shaking with excitement...needless to say the other small size rarities and fractional and Obsolete notes.

Is this biased?, he** no it's not..it is simply a fact!

I like collecting coins better because you can feel the value with coins more than you can with paper money, this is especially true of silver coins

It's gotta be coins. In the inherited collection I've got, there's notes, mostly silver certificates, but other than making sure they're stored properly, I haven't really done any research on them. My intent is too sell them locally and use the proceeds for collectable coins or bullion.

redwinn117...you just answered your own question, Paper does not last as long as metal..two different materials all together....therefore it stands to reason that fewer examples of Paper Money exist than coin examples in almost all case's of comparison.

Coinman Ben....

Mass is a physcial measure of physcial matter, all objects have a mass assoicated with it....value is an appointed measure that is accepted by or goverened by a placed value on that commodity... so indeed you can feel the mass of an object but can not feel it's value!

Not trying to be critical, just conveying a message to you guys...
Here are a few examples for you...go ahead, tell me if you can feel the value of these? Enjoy the images..all are from my personal collection.

Regards,

RickieB

Stunning. I would hate to guess what the coin equivalent of that list is. That is unbelievable. That $2 battleship and 1917 $2 is probably worth more than most people's entire coin collection's here! Insane.

The other cool thing about currency is, there's always new ones to discover. I've only dabbled in them but have looked at many. I recognize most of those and know most of the general dates. But a few of them I had never seen before.

Most of that list is accessible to the average collector...just not quite in those grades! RickieB, you're spoiling us.

Yes my friend, with all due respect, I know you know that it is simply a matter of education within the entire field of Numismatics....maybe I was a little harsh, but I do expect folks to know what they are talking about when making such remarks...you know I am a coin lover as well and there are many here that I revere the collections of...
