Brand New

I've only this year gotten interested in coins, so I don't have much of a coin collection. It all started when I noticed something on the back of a Jefferson Nickel I had never seen before - a big 'P' at the top. That started the curiosity and it hasn't really stopped since. Most of you probably knew I'm talking about a War Nickel, but if you didn't, it makes for an interesting read.

So far, I'm interested in Jefferson and Buffalo Nickels, Morgans, and some foreign coins. I've since bought a couple Morgans, a set of War Nickels, a couple Japanese and American proof sets, and a few other miscellaneous coins. A buddy of mine also recently bought me an NGC MS63 1881 S Morgan for my birthday (good friend, I know). I have the Red Book and the Whitman Morgan and Buffalo/Jefferson Nickel books, as well.

I'll post a picture of one of my newest acquisitions. What do you all think? Since I'm posting the pictures, I should ask how people take really good photos of their coins? I simply used a scanner, but is there a better method with a digital camera, offset lighting, etc?

Thanks for a great site.

Rob

Welcome to CT RnCJ. That looks like a nice Morgan you have posted. Do a search on how to scan or take pics of coins. It has been discussed more than once and there is some good information out there.

Welcome to CoinTalk. Ditto on the search thing. There are some Members here that take fantastic pics of their coins.

Thanks and another couple questions

Thanks everyone. I'm really happy I found this forum. There is so much good information on here. I've got a lot to read.

I have a question about grading coins. I recently joined PCGS and I wanted to send this Morgan to be graded. I have the mylar flips PCGS sells, but I wondered if I put the raw coin in the flip, or if I could put the plastic case it is in inside the flip for more protection? The case is an 'Air Tite' holder the dealer gave me when I bought the coin. The coin seems to be very secure in the holder.

Second part of the same question is do I have to submit the package via registered mail, or would Priority Mail with insurance be allowed and sufficient? PCGS recommends registered mail, but I live on an Army base overseas and I believe Registered mail can take some time to arrive (I will check with the Post Office to be sure). Lastly, can I ship this Morgan to PCGS in a bubble-wrap lined envelope, or does it have to go in a box. This envelope is another reason I'm asking about sending in the Air Tite holder instead of only in the flip.

Thanks again.
