Wonderful presentation, SM. As the young miss "Ceres" has a French flavor, I did a bit of looking around. Smilie's engraving of her is from the painting "Antique Poesy" by the French artist Jules Joseph Lefebvre, shown at http://www.iment.com/maida/family/mo...icars/p110.htm, and Ceres of course is the Goddess of agriculture.

A quick scan of Lefebvre's porfolio at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jules_Joseph_Lefebvre shows he was particularly adept at painting the French ladies.

This series of Danish notes was designed and engraved by Gunnar Andersen, in collaboration with Wilkinson and Son's Printers in London. The notes were later printed by the successor company, Bradbury Wilkinson and Company and finally by Thomas De La Rue after the printing companies merged.

This is one of those stirring, very well detailed and engraved vignettes that makes an impression - very important in banknote design and in the effort to thwart counterfeiting:

This note was first issued beginning in 1990, but was updated in 1996 with enhanced security features. The vignette on the note is of Clara Schumann(1819-1896) a composer, pianist, and wife of composer Robert Schumann. In an era when males were the main breadwinners in families, Clara Schumann actually became the main source of income for her large family with her husband and seven surviving children. Even great composer Johannes Brahms admired her works and collaborated with her on several of her works. This fantastic note with it's lovely engraved vignette of Clara Schumann was designed by Reinhold Gerstetter, working with Bundesdruckerie - the German Federal currency printer.

Another very memorable and stirring vignette, engraved by Nigel Alan Dow, this work dates to 1956, and represented the advent of a whole new series of English banknotes that replaced the famous "White" notes - how better to replace a classic and popular design with an even more classic and lovely design?
