Hello Everyone. This is my first post here. I intended to introduce myself in the intro thread (and still do) but I received my Lincoln Coin and Chronicles Set Saturday and there is something I hope you good people might help me with.
The Lincoln Dollar Proof has what seems to be an odd struck through error above the right eye. It’s an incuse circle like a small letter O. The area in the center of the circle has satin luster like the rest of the devices although the light travels across this area in a different direction than the luster surrounding it. The bottom of the incuse area seems to also have a grainy luster although a bit rougher in texture.
I’m stumped. I’ve seen this type of damage caused by staples and pins and such but never quite like this. I can’t account for what caused the circle nor the luster inside the circle rolling in a different direction but I have to admit I’ve only held a very few struck through errors over the last forty some odd years and I don’t know a lot about them.
If the New Orleans Mint was still striking coins and applying their mintmark with a punch I might be able to come up with some outlandish theory but it’s not and I’m hoping you guys can help me out.
It seems to me that whatever caused this might have left some similar damage in the die before falling away which might mean that there could be some Lincoln Commem’s with a raised circle in the same place.
I have never had much more than a passing interest in error coins and because of that I’m at a loss with this coin.
I would like to know what you all think, good or bad. I have attempted to take a few pictures.
